Dim Sum

Did an advanced search and cannot believe that I couldn't find an entry for dim sum! Surely I am doing something wrong in the search. But want to report that I have tried steam har gaw (shrimp) from Kimbo and again tonight had Vietnamese shrimp and crab spring rolls (cha gio tom cua) from the same company. Excellent! (Have also tried their shu mei but think my own are better.)

Three letter words can't be searched.

I love dim sum.

That is the message that kept coming up when I tried the search! I tried dim sum, dim+sum and dimsum! What does one find it under? My family loves dim sum, too, and would like to hear of others' experiences!

Several years ago a Chinese family from NYC opened a Chinese restaurant in a mostly residential section of Omaha. They did the cart-dim sum-thing on Sundays until about 2:00 in the afternoon. If you didn't get there by 10:00 am you probably were going to wait a good long time outside in a line! It was wonderful!!! Probably 50 varieties, all hand-made by their chefs!! After about two years they closed and went back to NYC "because they had been so successful!" And that ended dim sum in Omaha!

Such a shame. Dim sum is the greatest. I was completely beside myself when I first discovered that I could eat Chinese food for breakfast. At least on Saturdays and Sundays.

I used to make a pretty mean har gow, and can still whip up some nice potstickers from scratch.

My understanding (from some recipe or other) was that har gow wrappers should be made from de-glutenized wheat flour - which I never found. At one of our local Asian markets I asked the Vietnamese owner for flour to make the wrappers, and she sold me a sack of tapioca flour! Fortunately I found the Kimbo brand already made, and donated the tapioca flour to a friend who is gluten-intolerant!!! Don't know that I would have the ingredients, skill or patience to make the wrappers!

Hahahaha!!!

I go to Lin Heung Kei every Sunday for dim sum. Mmmmmmm.....

Spare ribs in black bean sauce...
Flowing sands bun...
Char siu bao...
Char siu bo loh bao...
Chicken feet...
Pig's trotter...
Pig's stomach...
Shrimp dumplings...

And a big gaiwan of Polay tea. Mmmmmm......

Yes, that is the stuff! Had it backwards; wheat gluten, not de-glutened wheat flour! However, I never did find it (except a big bag on the internet). But, as I said, found the pre-made stuff by Kimbo to be very good and very available to me!

Love dim sum! Lucky for me, Chicago's Chinatown is full of awesome restaurants that serve it up everyday. If your in Chicago, check out Shui Wah on Archer before 3pm.

I love dim sum! Hawaii is full of great dim sum restaurants, and are very close to authentic. However, I have yet to see a whole roasted suckling pig (baby version), turtle soup, and all the other tasty "delicacies" in one of the restaurants.

p.s. Not a fan of chicken's feet.
