Derby vs. Coarse Beard

I'm working through my sample pack, and so far the Derby blades are alright, but not great. A new one gives me a a decent DFS, but with some irritation (nothing I'd complain about though). I also noticed I can't seem to get more than 2 full 4 pass shaves with a single blade.

I have a fairly coarse beard. If you have a coarse beard, do you also share my opinion of the Derby? Just curious.

My beard isn't heavy but what's there is like wire. Just tonight I tried my first Derby blade in my SA. I have to say it's the first truly BBS shave I've had yet; the old stock Gillette blades from the '60s that Maher supplied are the only thing comparable. No other blades have even come close.

I should add that there were a few spots of blood (alum block took care of it fine), but that's just from me not paying attention. Didn't slice and dice myself or anything like it.

I have a coarse beard and used Derby blades for a while. I had a little better luck with them than you but after trying sharper blades I gave them up. I'm currently using Sharks.

I too have a coarse beard. I find that my third shave with a Derby is not particularly pleasant, so I've grown accustomed to tossing the blade after my second shave. I'm currently working through a sample pack, hoping that another blade will give me a slightly closer shave.

+1 on tossing the Derby blade after the second shave. After trying several different blades I settled on Derby blades for everyday use. Sharks are good sharp blades, but I find more weepers with sharks and feathers. I don't think there is any replacement for super sharp blades!

I'm in the same boat you are, and the best thing for a coarse, heavy beard is a good, sharp razor blade. Astras, Sharks (Haven't tried, but I've heard they're pretty darn sharp), and Feathers would probably be your best bet.

As for Derbys, they're really not a bad blade. It's just for a beard like mine or yours, you need something that can cut through those tough hairs with ease.

Thanks for the input. I am planning on trying my Feathers soon. Since I think they will be the best of the pack, I'm saving them for last. Next up will by the Crystals. After that Astra, Red Pack, and then the Feathers.

Derby are all right but they were better later on. I tried them with different razors and they performed better with the open comb. I had more experience so it might have done a difference. However, same here, never great. Crystal/Astra/Red Personna/Feathers are much better IMO.
