What's new

Derby blades.huh? PIF maybe.

I have been safety razor shaving for almost 3 months now. The first blades I had were Wilkinson Swords, and a 10 pack lasted me around 2ish months. I wasn't super happy with them, but was good enough to satisfy me and see what the buzz was about. I then got a sampler, and decided to try the Derby's first. I have been so underwhelmed with them. They are more mild than swords, which I really don't agree with.
So, with that, I guess I'm looking at PIF'ing them. It will end on my birthday (9/26). To enter, reply "Mo' mild, mo' betta"

I do find that sharper seems to work better with my super adjustable and my OC old type. I refuse to use a blade that may require 3 shims with the OC old type.

Im not a fan of the Derby's, but they have lots of fans on this forum.

Depending on how many you have, you could always keep them and try them if you get (may already) a new razor. Sometimes different crams / soaps can make a difference.

I normally try a new blade in both my razors for a while, then make my mind up.

I think it might be a bit off for a few months to get a new razor. Recently bought an OC old type and a GEM SE...the SA needs something sharp and I'm tempted to make a 3rd shim for the Old Type!

We share the same birthday (with also other great men like George Gershwin). I found Derby's weird except for when I used them with the Gillette NEW where they were great and with the College Tech which is the finest combined for me so far.
They are very thin and I think it is the very small blade exposure of those two that doesn't allow them to get bent or stuck. These are so cheap there is no harm in keeping them as almost anyone at one point tries a tech...

So, with that, I guess I'm looking at either PIF'ing them or trading. I'm thinking I'd rather trade the remaining 4 for something I don't have/haven't tried in terms of DE's or trade for 4 Teflon coat GEM's.
If I don't hear something about a trade by my birthday (9/26) I'll go ahead and PIF them; for that, respond "Mo' mild, mo' better!". However, understand that I may not do the PIF if I receive an offer I like by then.
Thanks for listening to my rant!

Man, I can't even PIF these blades on here...I could feel Derbys weren't very good when I tried them but didn't know they were that bad!

I like Derbies but I have quite a lot of them in stock. If there are no takers I suggest revisiting them later.

Your technique might evolve over time and this could change blade preference.

I feel like they started me on a bad habit. Used one, and it taught me to use pressure...and after it, my SE started to feel like crap, when it was better when I got it...

I still think they would be better served by making a video of taking a blow torch to them. Seriously. I wanna see that.

Ive found that Derbys are really dependent on the razor. If you rotate through many razors and only want to get one batch, probably not what youre looking for. But if they work for you, its hard to find a cheaper blade without buying a lifetime supply at once.
