Defeated by the 2013 R41

I shave daily & for the last couple of months, the only 2 razors I have used have been a Tradere OC & a FaTip Picolo. Having not managed to spill any blood with the FaTip, an acknowledged “aggressive” razor, I thought I would take things up to the next level & I bought a 2013 R101 (R41 head / black acrylic handle). I had read glowing reports of this razor, which stated that the razor scythed through bristles like a hot knife through butter & I liked the sound of this. I also saw it as a challenge for me to master the R101, as even in its tamed 2013 form, the R41 head still has a reputation for being a bit of a handful.

For my first shave with the R101, I used my usual prep & blade (Astra SP), which has been working very well with the FaTip & Tradere. I chose a Saturday to test drive my R101, so that I could take my time & not be rushing to get to work. My shave was quite “tuggy” & not at all smooth. I carried out my usual 2 pass shave (WTG/ATG) & was left with a beautifully smooth face, with no nicks, or razor burn. I just didn’t enjoy the shave because of all the tugging involved. The next day, I swapped the Astra into my FaTip & had a great shave, so the blade wasn’t a dud.

Undaunted by my previous experience, the following Saturday, I again loaded a new Astra SP into the R101 & despite some experimentation with angles, my shave was exactly the same as the last time, with a lot of razor tugging. I used the R101 again the next day, hoping for a breakthrough, but though the end result was very good, the journey to get there was again not at all enjoyable. Also, after back to back shaves with the R101, several bumps appeared on my neck, caused by ingrown bristles, which is something I have not experienced at all whilst using my Fatip & Tradere.

Today, in an effort to facilitate a change in my fortunes with the R101, I swapped my usual Astra SP for a Feather. This made the tugging far worse & I can only liken the shave to trying to remove a week’s worth of stubble with a blunt Mach3!! After finishing the WTG pass, I could take no more & swapped the Feather into my trusty Tradere. What a revelation! I had never used a Feather in my Tradere before, as I have always got a close, smooth, shave using the Astras. With the Feather in the Tradere, it took smooth to a whole new level.

I have now retired my R101 to the “naughty drawer”, where bad razors are sent to ponder on their behaviour! It will sit alongside my Muhle R89, which currently is the only other resident of the “naughty drawer”, due to the fact that it doesn’t shave very close & is the only one of my collection of 14 razors that causes me consistent razor burn. It would appear that Muhles aren’t for me.

I think you can all guess the razor / blade combo I will be using for tomorrow’s shave!

No worries, at least you get great shaves from two of your razors. I am thinking it is an issue with angles for your 89 and 101, though it doesn't help my argument much that you are getting smooth shaves from the other two. I say it might be the angles because there are usually a few things that cause a bad shave for me: pressure, improper angle, dull blade, and poor prep/lather.

This is surprising to me as I absolutely love my R41. I've found this razor to be smooth, but it does depend on which blade you use. For me, if I use Bics, I get ingrown hairs for some reason. Feathers are good, but harsh, supermax platinums and Gillette greens are decent, but Gillette Blacks are a dream. This may be a case of YMMV however I'd encourage you to stick with it as I've recieved daily barber shop close shaves with this razor for months.

I have limited experience with the 2013 R41, but I've shaved with it every other day since receiving it. The razor seems very sensitive to blade choice, I use a sharp blade with a shallow angle to avoid tugging. I think the razor is designed to feel "rake like". Try a Personna or Gillette black if you can.

I found the Tradere SB (and the OC 1st gen to a certain extent) to be some of the smoothest razors I've tried. I don't think the R41 can live up to the smoothness of these razors, but it does provide more feedback.

I wonder if the fact I shave every day is the issue, as I suspect that the R41 may be better at dealing with slightly longer stubble. I have tried the "rake like" angle, but it didn't improve things. I find this "rake like" angle works well with the Tradere though.

I have a variety of different blades at my disposal, so I think my next step with the R41 will be to have a pile of blades next to me & try a couple of WTG strokes with each blade type, until I hopefully find one that doesn't pull. Up until this point I have been a bit sceptical about the differences in blades (though I am sceptical about most things, hence my user name!). All blades seemed pretty similar, apart from Supermax blades, which refuse to cut my bristles at all.

I had the same problem you are having when I first received my 2011 R41. It was ok on wtg passes, but felt like someone scraped the blade on concrete and put it back in the razor for atg passes. I couldn't understand how people were using this razor. I was just about to give up, when I remember reading that some members were having good shaves by using a very shallow angle. Meaning the head of the razor is touching your face with the handle parallel to the ground(on your cheek). Go from the point that the razor is not cutting anything to barely cutting the whiskers. I had really good luck with this and it has changed the way I feel about the R41. It might work for you too. If not there are plenty of people who would take it off of your hands in the BST.

I'd just like to add that any tugging that I experienced was during the 1st WTG pass, and in the chin area. 2nd XTG pass is always smooth. Hopefully you find a blade that works for you, if not you can make someone happy on the B/S/T.

exact thing with me.

Sorry to say I too have given up with my R41 2013 model. For the very same reasons as a bove. THe shave while suer close was just to much hassel with checking angles, tugging, pulling etc. It's on the BST right now! Much prefer my Cobra.

+1. Low blade angle is what works best for me for the R41 (or any razor with a lot of blade exposure). Start with the cap on your face, and lower until the blade is just on your skin.

contradicting common believe I get along better with the 2011 R41 than 2013 R41 which to me is sensitive to blade angle. The 2011 R41 is real aggressive but manageable. Of course I would take 2 fatips any day over any potmetal Muhle product, no questions asked. Love the Fatip.

The 2013 R41 has hardly any blade exposure, that was what the 2013 modification did. My FaTip & Tradere show way more blade. In fact with the FaTip, the writing on the blade is visible!!

I much prefer shaving with my Fatip, my R41 '13 will be moved on soon I think.

I get a good shave, I just don't enjoy the experience.

Much prefer the Fatip and or my Pearl SSH-1 OC. Then again I much prefer my Gillette Popular and Aristoctrat #15. But then again I'm in a raunchy affair with the cobra currently.

Nothing wrong with not liking or not getting along with a razor model.
I like a lot how my R41 behaves on my face with almost every blade I have, but so what?
