Decant Shop Trial No. 2 - Hamman Bouquet

Good evening chaps. Another day and another fragrance sample tried. This morning's choice was Hamman Bouquet. I want to say that buying from the Decant Shop was a most pleasant experience. Superb service, fast delivery, and well packaged sample atomisers. You can choose different sizes of decants for most fragrances. I chose 3-4ml atomisers for the testers I bought. This allows me to try each scent a number of times to get a proper feel for each one and by spraying them on you won't waste as much as you would with splash.

I also wanted to gauge the interest of the forum to see if there is any interest in having me post a thread about each one of these fragrances? Something for the chaps like me who don't really know anything other than traditional woody fougere aftershaves and more bargain priced edts like Taylor or Trumper. These French, and in this case English, scents are really male perfumes even if they don't reach that strength. Any scent I wear that I would not choose as an aftershave is a perfume to me. Its sole purpose is scent. So something like the title of this thread for each one? There are only four so I am already half way through. I was thinking maybe a post every fortnight or so as I rotate through the scents. Good or bad idea?

Now to it. Straight away I have to own to something. I love English fragrances. I cannot say they are superior or inferior to French fragrances but they most certainly carry a different vibe. And I love them. While I love the traditional old fragrances like Spanish Leather and lavender water, I have noted I am considering branching out in the fragrance department. Hammam Bouquet is a large step in the right direction. Much as Mouchoir de Monsieur struck my old fashioned nose, Hammam Bouquet was even better. Much better. And that is not damning MdM in any sense. Hammam Bouquet's rich, fragrant top notes and rose, sandalwood and slight powder dry down are simply class to me. Most of you know know my rantings about modern fragrances but this makes it doubly clear to me. I like old fashioned scents. And this one is glorious. Fantastic staying power on me, I was astounded the sillage did not overwhelm me. Every so often you try a fragrance that simply melds with your body chemistry and your olfactory senses. Hammam Bouquet is that fragrance. Two quick sprays on each pulse point on my neck this morning and I could easily smell it most of the day and can nearly guarantee you my wife will still smell it on me when she arrives home this evening. Nearly eleven hours later.

Make no mistake. This is a RICH fragrance. Apply too much and you and you will be getting the wrinkled nose look from just about anyone you meet. I have to say I had always kind of avoided Hamam Bouquet because most rose heavy scents always blow my senses away in the sillage and I was sure I would not be able to wear it or even really like it. This is not the case and I am happy about it. My wife gave one of the biggest thumbs up I have ever noticed from her. She told me she likes it even better than Brooks Brothers 1818. I never thought I would ever hear her say something like that. The only downside to this is that currently I cannot find it on Penhaligon's USA web site. I do see it on their UK site. Is there some issue in getting Hammam Bouquet in the States? I am NOT starting any sort of rumour here. I simply noted the absence on their site which leaves a big hole as far as I am concerned. Someone tell me I can still get my hands on this.

Cheers, Todd

Absolutely. I think starting such threads would be a real service to the forum and to B&B members.

Great notes on HB. Never really has been a scent I wanted to wear, but I do own a bottle. I wonder if some of those looking for something like the hard to get DC 1913 would like HB. It has been a long time since I have had DC 1913, but unlike most folks I did not really like it. HB smells a lot like baby oil to me, which is pretty cool.

Would love to hear more opinions on English Fern and Sartorial since the new Penhalgion shaving soaps are coming out. Am guessing the edt scents will match the soap scents.

For sure we would like to hear your thoughts

Penhaligon's is a fantastic word. And Hammam Bouquet is a fantastic scent. I did not purchase Sartorial or English Fern samples. I have sniffed both and English Fern is a favourite. This is what all the ridiculous cotton candy, fresh scents of latter years should strive to be. Sartorial is a different scent altogether to my nose. It may say fougere but it is nothing like English Fern. It is modern but what I gathered from bottle sniffing at the AoS store in Kansas City, it is not overwhelming of the senses with sugar and shampoo. Far from it.

And Rob(The Knize), you have one the best user name and avatar combinations on Badger and Blade. Now to show my absolute fragrance newbie-ness, what is DC 1913? And yes, with encouragement like that I will post up a few threads on these decants. I have already mentioned some initial thoughts about Mouchoir de Monsieur and Egoiste but will make threads 1 and 3 for them. I used the Pour Monsieur by Chanel today. It will be listed No.4 . So no one should do a double take when they see later dates for the lower numbered threads. This is fun and I am sure I have my favourites picked out along with the surprise of Hammam Bouquet.

If you keep mentioning fragrances that I've tried or owned, then bring it on :D

I agree with Knize in that despite owning it, I've not worn HB more than once or twice.
I prefer darker rose fragrances; I'm on a real Rosam/Dirty Rose/Rossy de Palma kick at the moment. Waiting to try Dirty Rose Oud Extreme from Paul Kiler. - it's been made up and is soon to be on its way.

OP, you're right about the distinction between English and French fragrances. There's definitely a certain style that English frags tend to have, and although HB has a power that not many other English frags have, that powdery accord is still there in strength.
There is a surprising number of people who refuse to wear fragrances that aren't French, which is ridiculous.

Well sirs, another late coming follow up and more's the pity because this scent is a home run for me. I am not really a nose when it comes to scents. I usually cannot pick out minute differences in the notes. The main characters are always noticeable in a scent like this and the rose is abundant but NEVER feminine. This gorgeously blended, heady, almost decadent scent is a winner from top to bottom. If you go to Penhaligon's site and look at the note list, you would think it quite simple. All the major, old time players are there. Rose, sandalwood, neroli, bergamot, lavender, etc. Really? That simple? Nothing exotic? I am not sure but I can tell you the whole of the scent is greater than the sum of its parts. Rich, floral(again, you guys over 40, don't think of your grade four teacher and her ten cent per quart bottle of honeysuckle) , woody, and somehow spicy, at least to my wife, this a scent for MEN. What a godsend from the awful smell alike dreck in the department stores. I am most certain what is contained in my bottle is probably not exactly what it was in 1872 and I can tell you this is fine by me. This is a fantastic scent. I wore it to church a fortnight ago and asked my wife if she could still get a sniff of it around ten hours later. She said she did and that was when the spicy comment came out. So this one has legs in the basenotes. I should add I was not exerting myself or exercising that day so I am sure it helped with longevity. This has set itself at the top of my list as to favourite perfume/cologne scent or whatever you want to call it. Displacing my long standing fave of Trumper Eucris. This is a CLASS scent all the way. And even more versatile than the Mouchoir de Monsieur. By a long mile, that. Do yourselves a favour and get a decant and trial it well. It is no wonder to me at all it has been around for 132 years.

Cheers, Todd

I think our tastes must be very similar. I too love the more traditional scents that have some body to them. HB was described to me as roses crushed in baby oil and that description has stuck. So I always think of our as set and oily rather than powdery. But there's also some animalic, spicy funk that dances around the edges that keeps this one interesting and masculine. I really get the Turkish baths inspiration for this one.

Absolutely! I missed that part in my haste to update. Yes indeed, I was immediately aware of that somewhat animalic scent note and found it to be superior to the MdM. Like you I find this scent superb and it will always be with me in some form. Thank your for the response.
