DE shaving issues for black men?

Does using a DE razor and good quality shaving products ease/alleviate psuedofolliculitis barbae in black men or is the condition too tough for most sufferers to even shave at all.

Just curious. Obviously there is a whole market of products out there for black men ("bump fighter).

For me it has helped alot! YMMV though.

It took awhile but for me, washing my face at night and applying moisturizer before bed really helped.
Then shaving every morning , no days off and using a moisturizing balm as an aftershave.
My theory is that by keeping the skin soft, the hairs don't seem to grow under the skin but can break through.
Also by shaving everyday, the skin stays soft enough (read thin enough) for the hairs to escape.

Again this is a big YMMV issue, but it has really helped me in the last few months.

Enclosed below is a wealth of info on techniques and products for all men and specific info for men of color.

"As an Afro-American (51), who has been wet-shaving for over 30 years, my recuring problem of 'in-grown’ hairs has been ‘kind-of-sort-of' solved by using a old tooth-brush to ‘gently’ exfoliate my whole shaving surface (after proper shave prep (Klye's method...see link below), hot lathering-up & 'softening' of my 5:00 shadow), the night before and before my daily (weekends also), morning shaving ritual.

I found that that this 'daily' procedure plus proper shave prep and using 'High Time Bump Fighter 2 Extra Strenght' helps in the reduction of ‘in-grown’ hairs on my face".

Absolutely!

since I have been shaving 'old school', I rarely have any ingrown hairs, road rash or any other assorted shaving problems which I suffered through when using an electric or a multi blader.

many of the younger men who know me now come to me for advice and are wetshaving-they just haven't joined B&B! They have ordered blades and soaps after I have PIFed a razor and brush and soap to start them off with.

Recently, one of them told me after his shave w/ a tech, tweezerman, and QCS Basilica shave cream sopa, his wife turned over when he got into the bed and just said 'Hmmmmmmmm'.

Needless to say, he's hooked!:lol::lol:

For awhile I have discussed this with those I saw both in and now off active duty, as many know the military loves a shaved face. BUT for my fellow brother in arms of color the pain was evident on a few and the "no shave chit" was a pain. Then a buddy of mine mentioned during a coffee break that he also was a hard core DE shaver and used all sorts of soaps and creams. His view was as his father was quoted of saying, "Son look at these photo's of grand-father and great grand-fathers any bumps? No why ? Straight edges... and a damm good brush. Well he forgoed the straight but was a lover of Joris(due to his trip to France) and whenever he held shave classes at the clinic for the new young sailors his first rule was bring a brush, soap and throw the can and multiple blades in the ****can! Come to think of I never heard his wife complain once and he was always 4.0..

I can't speak for black people, because I am not, but having sufferd countless ingrown and infected hairs, switching to a traditional shave has made a huge improvment. I just pulled the last one a few weeks ago, and I think I am in the clear. I asked a black friend of mine who switched from a mach3 to a SE and soap/brush, and he said he has not seen any new ingrown hairs. He was going to a dermatologist on occasion to have them lanced, so it is looking good for him.

Yes I believe it helps. I think also what is important is shaving in the correct way..i.e., taking into consideration the direction of hair growth. I started following a similar pattern as seen on http://www.blackbumps.com and it has dramatically reduced my psuedofolliculitis barbae (pfb) aka razor bumps.

Also countless videos on YouTube that show what you can do.. etc etc.

regards.
