What's new

DE Shaving is like learning to drive a car.

I started DE ing on 31st May, it was my 50th, I had come across this site and thought, I like the look of this... I have a few post in here about my trials and tribulations.

I read and continue to read posts on aggressive setting, mild settings, razor angle and all has been helpful information and for that I am extremely grateful because I probably would not have continued without the support found within the pages of this most excellent forum.

The reason I make a comparison with DE shaving and Learning to drive, is that with most things in life practice makes perfect and along that route you take a dip where you have issues on roundabouts or your reverse parking is not quite right ( sideways across the road is not a good thing). As in shaving, you start having impressive no nick BBS shaves and then the next day you rip your face off.

With driving confidence is the key, with shaving its the same thing....

5 days ago, I opened up my Slim Adjustable to 9 with a Derby, I know that this is a mid razor but having had issues over the past 7 weeks with any setting over 6, this was a brave move..

... It was the best shave experience, 3 passes, nice and smooth, I did the same the next night and the blade dragged, I changed it for another Derby and off i went same result.

I continued this until 4 Derby shaves were done and all were BBS and no irritation whatsoever on my neck.. so last night I went this path..

EJ DE89L, Personna Blue, Taylor of Bond St Sandalwood ( This stuff irritated my neck or so I thought), I followed the same principle, perfect shave, easier because the Persona's are a lot sharper than derby's, but the same result but quicker.. and no irritation.

So new shavers everywhere, stick with it, get to know your equipment, your beard and the angles of your face, also let your skin get used to the process... happy shaving, I know I will..

Now where did I leave the car keys....

nice post Dave.

I agree that confidence is a major factor in learning to properly shave. Don't be nervous, don't be afraid. Be cautious of the sharp blade, be confident.

And don't give up!

DE shaving is like learning to drive a car...straight shaving is like learning to drive a car with a stick shift.

Good job on getting great shaves. But, I have to say it...a Slim...on 9...with a Derby?! Are you mad, man?! :tongue_sm

I think that's a great comparison. You can read about it and learn but you just have to jump in and do it. When you first learn, you improve by leaps and bounds every day, but after a while, it becomes second nature and refined and ingrained.

I only have 7 DE shaves under my belt. Today I fell a little backwards. It's easy to become overconfident after a no nick shave. But like driving, accidents happen. You learn from them and move on. Here's to the next shave!

As a retired police officer, who is now a behind the wheel driving instructor, I always tell nervous students to take a look at all the other drivers on the road. When they do I tell them that each one had to learn how to drive just like the student is doing. I tell them that no one is really a born driver, and all have to learn. Its the same with DE shaving. You have to perfect your technique, practice, and learn how to shave the right way. The more you do it, the better you get at it, it just takes time.
