Day trip to Houston

The SWMBO, the boy, and myself will be staying the night in Houston, TX Friday, and spending the day there Saturday. We'll be staying near the galleria. I know there's a pen store (Paradise Pen Company and Montblanc) in the mall. Any other pen stuff or shaving stuff nearby? Any cafes worth stopping at? Flea Markets/Antique Stores?

First, love the user name!!

Second, there is a place called British Isles that is on that end of town:

I have never been there but they seem to have it all. Travel safe and enjoy!

Unacceptably Lasering Chicken Giblets?
While at the Galleria eat at The Cheesecake Factory. Share the chicken Madeira plate with your wife. Then enjoy the dessert. Good stuff.

I think we were planning on going to the Rainforest Cafe... mostly because our 3 year old will have a great time. lol

Co-workers were going to the Rainforest Cafe and I skipped it. They asked me what was good there to eat and I replied, "Nothing"! But it's for the little one and not u 2. Don't skip the ice skating at the Galleria. Most of all enjoy yourselves. There is a wonderful children's museum, an incredible Holocaust Museum, and then the natural history museum with dinosaurs. Also a butterfly planetarium. The little one will love the butterflies landing on him! Herman Park is the area where these are.
I hope you enjoy yourselves.
i wish I were eating beneits and drinking coffee at the cafe du Monde.

enjoy the little one while he enjoys himself

Yeah, living in New Orleans, I would never visit Houston for the food!:lol:

We're trying to find some things that we don't necessarily have here in NOLA. We have a Children's Museum, and Insectarium, so we crossed those off the list. I think we're gonna go to the trampoline place. Of course, he probably won't let us leave, but when we do, he'll sleep well! I would love the Holocaust Museum, but I'm not sure he's ready for that level of reverence just yet.

The Galleria has plenty of eating options from food courts to upscale dining. We like The CheeseCake Factory and the restaurant in Nordstrom's. There used to be a store in the strip center across from the Galleria called Jeffrey Stone, LTD which sold Mont Blanc, Parker and other fountain pens. They also had a selection of cigars which I thought was odd. I don't know if they are still in business; did not find a website. If you go to Rice Village (location of the store in the link above) you will find more eating options as well. There are antique stores "inside the loop" (the area east of the Galleria) but I have never looked for razors there so I have no recommendations.

The weather in Houston and New Orleans is about the same heat / humidity wise so I will not say anything else about that except to say Houston is one of the most air-conditioned places on the planet; we could not survive without it! Enjoy your trip.

P.S. - You are right about one thing; I doubt your little one is ready for the Holocaust Museum; perhaps someday but not yet.

Though Rainforest was made for the youngster in tow, I'd suggest Sylvia Enchiladas on Westheimer... quite possibly the best enchiladas I have ever had, including my won. btw, we are hhaving amazingly good weather right, unusually cool (if 93 degrees can be concerned cool) and the humidity is down as well. Last week at this time it was three digits... so your timing is perfect. The bad news... rain is in the forecast for this weekend.

Same here. Weather wise, whatever we get here, you got first.

I would second the British Isles recomendation. Lot's of products there and the prices arn't too terrible. I've picked both my silvertips for about $60/ea as well as assorted soaps/creams. I'm still using the EJ Sandalwood Puck I bought 6 months later...

Houston is packed with places to eat....it's one of the things we are known for! Check out our new Trader Joe's on S. Shepard or Central Market just up the street from the Galleria.

Take a look at the Houston Press Best of Houston list. There is also an Android and iphone app with the same info.

Lot's of good places to choose from.

If you like tiramisu, then go to Sorrento on Westheimer (a few minutes from the Galleria) http://www.sorrentohouston.com/menu/dolce-menu

If you like Latin American, you MUST go to Churrascos (also close to Galleria). https://www.cordua.com/churrascos-menu.html They have awesome food from empanada to crab claws (when in season) to tres leches cake. If you like beef, you have to try their signature steak "The Churrasco". It's amazing.

I lived in Houston for a few years and these are the two restaurants I visited the most. You won't be disappointed.

Have fun.

We ended up not having too much time. The inspection sticker process took WAYYYY too long, because I didn't realize I had a tail light out. Then we got brunch at The Breakfast Club, where we waited in line for over an hour and a half. Fortunately they're prepared for such waits and had a bounce house, painting station, and a balloon lady for the kiddos. In my wife's words it was the "best longest wait ever!" Finally, we ended up at the Children's Museum where we spent about 2 hours!! The quick trip was great fun! And we'll definitely be visiting Houston again soon!

New Orleans definitely has good food but Houston isn't lacking by any means. You certainly can't judge our food scene based on chains (especially Landry's chains IMO).

Any cafes worth stopping at?
Bit late but worth's always highly subjective. What are your priorities on this topic? If it's the quality of the coffee itself I'd highly recommend Catalina, Blacksmith & Southside though there are certainly other options as well. If your priorities lie elsewhere then other shops might be better suited to you.

The Breakfast Club was definitely worth the wait! Chicken wings and grits for breakfast? Thank you very much!

Have you seen my posts in The Café? If the coffee's not good, I'm having water.

If you get back to Houston you need to check out Dromgoole's Fine Writing Instruments. It's one of the best pen stores i have been in....

http://dromgooles.squarespace.com/

My girlfriend and I visited it on Sat afternoon for the 1st time and were disappointed at the customer service or lack thereof. Some young kid working the counter did next to nothing in showing her the pens they had and spent far more time flirting with the young girl that worked there.

You would have thought one of the older gents who worked there, I assume the owner, would have corrected the situation or taked charge but they continued to chat amongst each other. My gf had about $150 burning a hole in her pocket looking to buy a fine pen, yet walked out in disgust at the lack of attention.

A month ago we visited a fine pen store in Little Rock and had the opposite experience. The salesman there spent about 45 mins showing her different pens and let her test out their writing ability. He was patient with her answering questions and such. She wind up buying a nice pen and even had it engraved.

I am really sorry to hear that your experience at Dromgoole's was bad. I have had the same young man helped me before;he is the son of the owner. Unfortunately he knows very little about the pens. Still, no excuse for being treated poorly. Larry is the owner and is a very nice guy. If you go back you might ask for him.

Sometimes on a Saturday Stephen Pustilnik (call ahead of time) who is the Pen Doctor, works in the store. He has helped me afew times with pen's that needed work and was fun to talk too. I havebought pens, ink and paper there and have had a good time doing it.

Was the pen store in Little Rock called Vanness? If it was, the few times thatI went there it was a great experience. I had an older gentleman who waited on me. I think he may have been the owner. I bought two bottles of ink, paper and a Lamy pen, he gave me an extra nib for free. Every time I go to Little Rock I try to visit Vanness.
