What's new

daily rinsing/cleaning 3 piece DE

I'm making the move to try a new razor. I've been having a lot of great shaves from my Gillete slim adjustable, but I'm ready for a new acquisition.

I've decided on a Muhle 89L...but I have a question for 3 piece users:

I've been removing my blade after every shave to clean the underside which seems to accumulate a lot of gunk, which doesn't rinse out after a few seconds under the faucet.

That's easy with a TTO...not so with a 3 piece.

Do 3 piece users here disassemble daily or only at blade change?

I only unscrew my 3-piece razors when it is time to change a blade. I change blades every three shaves so it does not get all that gunky. When I change the blade I spray with a little scrubbing bubbles and use a soft toothbrush, if necessary.

I rotate among several razors but give all of them a good cleaning in my ultrasonic cleaner as needed.

I disassemble the razor when I'm done shaving every morning to clean it. I dry it and reassemble with the cleaned blade or new blade depending if I'm changing it for the next shave.

It becomes an habit at one stage and only take a minute.

I loosen the head of my Tech, and swish it in the sink and/or under the faucet. When I change blades, I hit it with scrubbing bubbles.

I have the Muhle 89R new model. I only give it a quick clean when changing blades - every 3 or 4 shaves. Otherwise just a good rinse

Same here.

I flip the blade also

I rarely disassemble my 3-piece razors, genearlly only with a blade change. But I also don't rinse under running water~a vigorous swish in my full sink's enough usually.

The only time for me, (EJ chatsworth, new muhle head) is when I change the blade. Only exception is when I travel and use a Tabac shave stick it gets gunked up, (only happened a couple of times so far). When I get home, just change the blade and rinse real well no special cleaning. Maybe I should but looks clean.:w00t::lol:

+1, likewise.

when you guys who disassemble every shave take the blade out what do you do with it? I'd be afraid to put it down on an edge by accident and unnecessarily ruin a perfectly good blade.

When I disassemble the razor I take care of the blade first. I clean it or get rid of it if I had to change it. As soon as the blade is clean, I leave it on the counter next to the sink while I clean the razor. I drop it there flat and carefully slide it on the edge of the counter to pick-it up when I'm done with the razor. The edge of the blade doesn't rub or touch anything in the process.

I don't shave daily, so I find that if I hand-strop my blade just a couple times on each edge after every shave, the blades actually last a LOT longer.
(hand stropping removes any bit of moisture from the edge that could cause it to rust between the end of one shave and the start of another.)
I just set the blade down on the towel that I used for prep while I'm working on the razor.
Makes it easy to pick up and there's not really any chance of damaging the blade edge.

Hopefully that way my Mergress will outlast me

What kind of gunk are you getting? Are you using a Pre Shave Oil? It should only really need a cursory rinse. The new glue-spots from blades are the most annoying part of daily cleaining for me.

I usually get leftover lather + whiskers stuck on the blade. Even with a good rince, it stays there. If I disassemble the razor, I can easily get rid of that. I did now use shaving oil lately.

Keep the blade on the razor until it is time to change for a new blade.

I just wipe the razor with a clean, dry towel to remove any residue. No special cleaners needed, unless you really want to get every little nook and cranny.

I set it across a corner of the small felt pad I rest my razor on, so no edge comes in direct contact with anything I can easily pick it back up.

Cleaning your razor with blade in:

1) run under hot water to rinse off soap and crud

2) submerge head in jar of 99% alcohol briefly to force out all the water (I keep a large mouth mason jar and just stick one in for 5 seconds or so, let drip a bit, and stick it back in the rack for a good dry. Never get rust.)

Taking Blades temporarily out of the razor:

Use a thick coin on your counter - it is easy to drop the blade on by holding the ends, and very easy to pick up again without sliding on the counter - protects the blade. I use an old British 1 pound coin - perfect size
