What's new

D.R. or Geo F.

Just got bit by wet shave bug. Have a couple Col. Conk large pucks because they were cheaper. Now read that the hard soaps last much longer thus making them more economical than I had thought. Is there a clear choice in Geo F. Trumper v.s. D.R. Harris soaps for use on sensitive skin? Also am I safe in assuming either of those will produce thicker lather than the Conk's?

I don't think there is a "clear choice" for someone with sensitive skin as people have different sensitivities. Both are great soaps and preference will come down to individual preferences. They will both be a huge step up over col. conk soaps in my opinion.

If it were me, I'd go for either GFT Rose or Harris Almond or lavender. One point is the Harris is more economical. You get 100g per puck vs. 80g with GFT.

Not sure about the sensitive skin, but both are very good choices.
I'm a fan of Trumper products, so I'd lean toward that.
If you are looking for a low cost cream, try the Real Shave Co. sensitive.
It's good and cheap, but it's a cream.

I think you can choose Harris lavender and marlborough or Trumper's coconut, rose and violet for your sensitive skin, and whatever work very well, never try with trumper limes dont is good for sensitive. And yes you'll have a thicker lather best scent, quality, package, etc. than the Conk's.

Of the two, I would check out Harris Lavender which is amazing or Almond which is sort of bitter.

The scents are what are best about Harris shave soaps.

I am leaning toward those two. I actually like the scent of the Conk's Almond so the Harris sounds like a winner.

Your "sensitive face" is a wild card. I have no idea if any soap will work. It really depends on what your sensitive too.

May I suggest Institute Karit soap. It's great soap, but without a real scent. It lathers like crazy, and beats the snot out of Col. Conk.

In all honesty not severely sensitive. Stay away from fake jewelry and hygiene products with too much harsh chemicals and I'm AOK. Settled on Dr. Bronners bath bars and went as organic as possible with the rest. Really was attempting to gather insight from those of you have have been through the trial and error process that I will have to experience as well. Thanks...

The conk almond is nothing like the Harris Almond. Harris Almond will not strike you as Almond at all. It is really an old English formula for Almond - Eucris sort of thing. Nice, but not a sweet almond at all. I've grown to really like the scent, but I don't know why they call it Almond. It's Almond flower blossom, NOT Almond nut oil.

I second IK for sensitive skin. It's one of my favorites.

My favorite Harris is Lavender. It will class up your shave den big time.

I like both D.R. Harris and Trumper soaps, and own several of each. :blushing: The scents of the Trumper soaps are generally a little better. The performance of both is excellent. I tend to slightly prefer Harris soaps, as I think I get a slightly better lather from them. Harris soaps have some scent, the most noticeable ones are Arlington and Marlborough. Since you mentioned some skin sensitivity issues, I would stick with either Harris Almond or Lavender, or Trumper Almond or Rose. Either way, you will make a good choice.

You may not realize it now, but you'll eventually buy both, at which time you'll know the answer to your question! :biggrin1:

Both are good soaps. My preference is for DR Harris - lavender in particular. It's got the tallow. It is the goods.

For the Traditionalist, none better than your choices you've laid before yourself. Geo. F. Trumper Rose Shaving Soap is probably my all time favorite but the DR Harris Almond is sublime. It has a very unique scent that I enjoy. Quite a bit of yin/yang on those two selections.... both would suit most any traditionalist, dandy, or rake.

Is the Harris Almond soap really that much different in scent than the Harris Almond cream? I'm getting the impression from this thread that it must be because I tried the cream and found it overly sweet, almond and cherry.

I'm not much for experimentation. Since these high quality soaps will last a lot longer than my Conk's I want to select a fragrance that is recommended more than not and run with it. The Lavender Harris seems to have won the race. Probably will also try the Trumper Rose and Harris Almond at some point. Thanks and by all means continue to add impressions.
