What's new

D.R. Harris Lavender

Has anybody who is familiar with the older stock of this cream, which came in the older-style pot with both royal warrants, tried any recent batches? I've still got some old stock left, and have been a little hesitant to try more recent batches, based on rumors of reformulation that were circulating at the time the brand underwent a pakcaging change. (Rumors Harris flatly denied, FWIW.) However, the most recent post in the review thread on this cream shows it may well be the same old stuff, only in a newer tub. The cream in that review doesn't look quite as "fluorescent" in its mauve coloring as the stuff I've got, but that could just be the lighting. Its high density appears to be the same, however. I may end up buying some just to see, but I'd still be interested in feedback from those who have used multiple vintages.

HC,

I was fond of the old lavender formula myself. I used it exclusively for several years. When I depleted my stash three years ago I purchased the new stuff and as you know...it was NOT the same product at all. Totally different. I was not reading forums at that time, and even I knew the jig was up. I threw it out it was so bad.

With the news of the Rose coming out and hope that the formula was the same as old I placed a large order from the UK.

I should have it early this week and expect to give some news then.

I have the old version and it is a dark purple in color. I believe the newer version is lighter in color. There were some issues early on, but I think some of the more recent reviews I read regarding the Harris creams have been very positive.

I think an honest review may have to come from someone who has both the old and the new on hand. I'm talking about the metal tube stuff time frame.

I think people forget how good the old was, or the new is made so similar to the other brands that it seems "okay".

It was something special.

Well fellas, I have shaved the DrH Rose the last two days.

These things are subjective you know? I like it. I like it a lot. It is difficult to know if it is the exact same. In texture it is more runny and not as thick. But, it does have that same richness to it. Some have suggested that the old stuff I had (many metal squeeze tubes) were probably aged and that was the reason it seemed so thick and rich to me.

This new order has renewed my confidence in Harris cream and I plan on ordering more. I've missed the richness of fragrance in creams. The last reformulation or hiccup in Harris quality sent me exploring soaps extensively years ago so I can't complain.

Scent? It's soft, pure, and not as sweet or perfumed as the T&H. For me this is a plus.

Petr, thanks for the report. I've heard this new rose cream does not contain parabens, which would make it a different formula from the older one, no?

Yes, that detail would surely make it different. The new from London is more gooey, viscous, tacky, sticky. The old seemed more thick cake icing like to me. I am going to work with it all week.

HC, do you find your old harris pots noticeably different in texture than other brands like TOBS . I suppose I want to make sure I am not chasing my tail here. Maybe I am hung up on that darn metal tube. I don't think so, but maybe.

The thing is I got effortless irritation free shaves every time from the old lavender stuff. That is why I am crazy about it. That is also why I used it exclusively for business travel. I know I would have never used it to travel if I ever had a red mark on my neck. That was a no no.

I wonder if there is any old stock around the US? Anyone want to sell me Harris in a metal tube or pot older than six years old?

Different from the newer (post '06) formulation TOBS, yes. The old Harris matched the old TOBS and Coate's fairly well, although the old Harris was perhaps even denser. The closest thing to it these days seems to be Trumper, although I say this, obviously, without having tried any of the newer-generation Harris creams.

just received DRH lavender in the plastic tube, assuming it to be the new formulation. As with any of the DRH products I have tried, great performance and lather. However, having tried other lavenders, CF, TOBS, and TH, I am truly disappointed in the fragrance of the DRH, very faint lavender fragrance. The CF, TOBS and TH are all very good. The TH, while quite good, has an almost synthetic fragrance to it, very different from the CF or TOBS in terms of fragrance. I'm really sorry I missed out on the old formulation DRH lavender!
