Cut myself while shaving. What to do right there and then? and how to minimize scar?

Hey guys,

So I just bought myself a new shiny Merkur Futur and I didn't give it the respect it merited. So while I was shaving, I cut myself, medium deep at an area of roughly 5mm in length. It started bleeding and it wouldn't stop, but I did as if nothing has happened and I continued shaving. I did my 3 passes and finished the shave, and applied my after-shave. Then it stopped.

What is the best approach to take when you cut yourself (medium deep cut, nothing extra serious) when shaving? Do you abort the shaving to apply a bandage or something? or do you do something else right there and then?

And how would you minimize possible scarring afterwards?

Thanks for any reply/advice.

A Styptic pencil would probably stop the bleeding. Then a few days of Neosporin might not be a bad idea. If it appears that it is going to scar you can use a product like Mederma to reduce the appearance of the scar. Hope you heal swiftly.

Stop the bleeding, that's the first thing to do, if you don't stop that then your shaving days are over
As for the scar well, I always say you earn them and each one tells a story. :thumbup1:

If you develop a scar and people ask you about it you can just reply "Safety razor my ***" and scowl

On a helpful note i'd try to stop the bleeding first then carefully finish off my shave.

So I should rinse, and apply a Styptic pencil? do I wait a few minutes before resuming? and can I pass again over that cut area (that now has the styptic matter covering it)?

Get a pencil. (CVS and walgreens carries them). Got a nice chin scar (Ambrose straights are darn sharp ) I usually apply the pencil after I'm done shaving let it sit for awhile rinse off then go about my day.

I concure and for some of us minor face scarring gives you a real Tough Guy Personna. So if you get a scar and Mederma doesn't work embrace and use it to it's full advantage.

Rinse, apply pressure, then apply Neosporin or a generic equivalent. You may want to ask your doctor what to do to best minimize scarring. The styptic might not be the best idea for that, but it will stop the bleeding.

If the styptic works, it works immediately. Then you can just proceed (but try to avoid shaving over the cut ).

To avoid cuts in the future, be sure to avoid sideways movement of the blade. This is most readily done by having the razor stroke "in motion" as you're putting the blade in contact with your face. For a newbie it's difficult because you're a little nervous and you want to set it down then start the stroke.

I don't often need more than a cold water rinse to stop a small nick from bleeding, but here's what I do if necessary. After I'm finished shaving and cleaning up, I apply ice to the cut for a minute or so, quickly blot the cut dry, and apply a dab of Vaseline to it. The cut doesn't bleed through the Vaseline and usually not even a scab forms. It works for me. YMMV

On a laceration, I don't believe I would go the styptic route. man, would that hurt.

I would stop shaving (blood and lather just start bumming me out after a bit), flush the wound as best as you can - letting the blood flow a bit in this case (especially if you are having airway issues) may be a good thing, it is natures flushing action - and then compress for as long as you can stand it. I'm too vain to have a band-aid on my face, so compression till blood stops flowing and the laceration seals and then very careful with that area for the next few hours. The good news is it's on your face which doesn't get a lot of abuse as opposed to a cut on the hand.

Watch out what you use to compress the laceration as it tends to stick and when you pull it away it may reopen.

thats' what I would do.

How do you think that Al Capone got the nickname "scarface"?

Seriously, I doubt you will have any kind of noticable scar after a week or two goes by and ultimately the whole thing will just be a distant memory.

If you DO develop a scar, I have used a cream called Scarzone on surgical scars, it works very well. I fact, using it right now for my last arm surgery. If it works for incisions that were stretched open far enough to fit power drills and saws in (serious), it will work for a shaving accident. :wink2:

Does this really work?? How long it took for your scar to diminish in appearance?

Can shaving cuts cause scars? If they are not terrible.
I cut myself pretty badly because I didn't notice the lump on my face, it turned to a sore but I was just expecting it to go away completely.

Basically, what everyone else is saying. First, you do need to stop the bleeding. A styptic pencil will do the trick for a minor cut. Seal My Nic is another product which does not leave the white residue and does a good job. I would not shave over that area until it heals. Definitely do not go over the area during that shave. Neosporin will help to prevent some of the "scabbing" over that will cause scarring. Personally, I like the battle scar stories myself! :wink2:
