Creative shaving racks and stands

The wheels have been turning in my mind since last weekend when a member built his own out of poplar wood. Since then another member built one out of maple wood to hold his DE razors.

Razor and brush manufacturers don't seem to make any kinds of stands that hold a collection and I really don't understand why, because wet shaving enthusiasts often have multiple razors and brushes. Some of you vendors or individuals who like working with wood might consider buying and refurbishing equipment that might serve this purpose because I would have gladly bought a stand I knew in advance would work rather than going through all this hassle.

So what I did last weekend was look at smoking pipe racks, primarily on ebay. It was a pain because you had to contact the seller and make sure the opening on top was wide enough to slip the straight razor in. You have width issues between holes if you want to hang DE razors.

Anyway, I wound up with this purchase of a solid oak pipe rack

. The hole on top is wide enough to insert my razor and the indention below should keep it in the rack.

I also bought this multipurpose organizer and figured if I couldn't use it for razors, it would come in handy for something else http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=400118304916&ssPageName=ADME:X:AAQ:US:1123

What I found out is that there are a lot of genuine hardwood pipe racks (and pipes if you smoke) on ebay that originated from estate sales. A lot of people quit smoking (or didn't take up the practice) over the years and a lot of things that could hold razors are for sale. Some of them have humidors, which could be used to store blades or pucks of soap.

Remember, however, if you go this route measure your razors, and then contact the seller to make sure the pipe holders will fit the razors. On a lot of them, the hole on top was too narrow to insert the razor.

Now for a creative way to hold the brushes...

I'm waiting for one to arrive that I ordered from the bay. I got it for my straights, and just got the open slot top on it. It'll hold 6 straights, which is all I'll need. :thumbup1:

The cost was around $16 or $18 bucks.

Another easy way is to use an shelf bracket ( looks like a metal L ) and an eye bolt (has a hole and a screw thread)I use a 4 inch bracket either one or two eyebolts ,a couple of nuts, cut off excess and polish or leave plain for a more stainless look. Works great and costs about $ 4.00 each.

I've got a bit of scrap aluminum around from my tube amplifier projects (another passion) and have been giving some thought to making an aluminum stand.

I've got a few sketches for one that will hold four brushes and put five or six razors behind them.

I finally have some workshop space down in Arizona and should have the tools set up in the nex couple of months. I can't wait to put the drill press and scrollsaw to use making something interesting.

The trouble with pipe racks is that while they hold your razors, they don't really display them (the same applies to pipes, I suppose). In the front row, the neck of the handle is covered up, and you can't see the handle at all in the back. I've made several stands at home, and I find that "less is more". Nothing beats suspending a razor between a couple of lucite dowels. All it takes is a drill and a steady hand.
