Cream brush, Soap brush?

Would it be better to buy one good brush for soaps and creams like the savile row 3824, or buy two less expensive brushes that are more taylored to soap and cream?

However, I have a very floppy badger. YMMV

First let me stifle a chuckle...:blushing:

Sorry about your floppy badger... I bet it feels soft on your skin.

I use a boar bristle (one of the VDH cheap ones) for soaps. Since being broken in, it works WONDERFULLY.

I use a pure badger for creams.

I have not tried a fair test of badger on soap or boar with cream. But, I HAVE gotten the same advice from others. (Boar on soap, badger for cream)

Wow..imstill new and learn somethin fromhere almost everyday!..badger for cream..boar for soap...interesting

I have a Savile Row Silvertip that I find works best on creams and I have a couple of boar brushes that do well with soap.

Having said that, I have a Rooney 3/1 in Super that does pretty well with both.

Any brush should work just fine for both creams and soaps. You just have to work out the best way to use your particular brush in each circumstance. I have a floppy badger travel brush that should only be good for creams according to conventional wisdom. Funny thing is that it lathers like a champ with the shave sticks I take when traveling, and does a nice job lathering off the puck as well.

I neglected to say this earlier:

The synthetic brush sold at The Body Shop has been a great tool for my travel kit. I use soaps to avoid TSA wrath on liquids, aerosols and gels. So I pack hard soap. The synthetic brush does a great job.

Worth every penny for the indulgence of using a brush on the road, while not ignoring one of my other workhorses, or risking losing one of them.

One is enough. However before you know it the little fellows seem to multiply all on there own anyway.:wink2: So you really have no choice in the matter. :001_smile Before you know it you will be posting Brush's for sale in the buy and sell section...:001_rolle

HA! I can see brushes comming in droves in my future. I think I may get addicted. Problem is SWMBO will not tolerate it!

My problem is, the brush I have now I am not happy with. It is a Caswell Massey Bristle and badger. It does not seem like it holds enough water to make masses of cream like I think a good brush should do. It just doesnt seem like its dense enough. It is also not the softest feeling thing for sure.

I guess I would like to know if getting a "Best" badger brush will satisfy me for a year or so, or if I need to spring for the "Silvertip" right away? I will primaraly be using Porasso cream and experimenting with VDH soap, but would like to expand my arsenal.

I have been kind of eying up an Omega #641 or 627, Rooneys(style 1 or 3 in best or super), Shavemac(dont know much about but know they are good), or Savile Row(the one that won the WAR).

Definetly want the most bang for the buck, to satisfy me for a good long time with brushes. It seems like if I do get Addicted then my pocket book will be taking a big hit cause these things aint cheap!

I went the route of a reasonably priced badger and a boar brush. I'll use Shoebox Shaving as an example, feel free to check with any vendor. Shoebox carries the Vulfix line. It's really easy to get a pure badger brush for under $30 of good quality. You could even get a badger/boar mix for under $20. http://www.shoeboxshaveshop.com/old-progess-vulfix.html. He has a Boreal brush on cleanance for $3.99, almost worth throwing in there because it's cheap. You can certainly go up or down from there.

Given the price of the Saville Row you are thinking about, you could get an awesome badger and still throw in a boar brush.

You posted just as I was posting. Looks like you are already peeking at Rooneys. I think you'll get a flood of recommendations on a 3/1 super. Can't go wrong there or possibly a 1/2. I liked the 1/1 Super I had. It did fine with soaps and creams, better with creams.

I would go for a silvertip. There are some real brush experts who can tell you every thing to know about brushes. I am sure one will come along shortly. For me the softness of a silvertip is one of the true pleasures of wet shaving.

Agreed. You couldn't pay me to go back to boar or pure badger.

Buy the 3824. Its a terrific brush that will perform as well as much more expensive brushes. The soap/cream brush concept is really unnecessary. I have a number of brushes and any one of them will do just fine with either soap or cream. One of my brushes is the 3824 and I reach for it often. The 3824 now comes with a shorter loft which makes it even better than the older model in my opinion.
