Crack In 1K Chosera

This is not what I wanted to see this morning - or any other day to be honest.
This stone has seen a lot of action, but nothing really unusual - never dropped, banged, soaked for too long etc.

There are a few fissure lines showing - this one was the easiest to photograph.

So far - nothing is affecting my honing, I just used it this morning - but it's disturbing; I can't help but think that it should be replaced fairly quickly.

I've been meaning to try the Shapton Pro 1k - might be the time see about picking one up.

Ahhhh crap.....:mad3:

That doesn't look like the "superficial" variety either.... Can you feel it when honing?

I can't feel any of them with the tip of a sewing needle when I drag it across any of the fissures.
I agree - it's not just a superficial surface distraction. That's not going to sit there - it'll get worse. The others seem less invasive at the moment but who knows.

Great minds think alike.

I would draw a bead of CA glue on them when thoroughly dry and lap the ca back off the surface.

Yep - did that a short while ago. Might work.... still gonna bug me though.

I would contact the manufacture, it wouldn't hurt to see what they say.

Considered this first - given that it's several years old, seen way too many razors to count, and I wrote on it with a sharpie - I don't think Naniwa is going to see their way to replace the stone. Won't stop me from trying though - but I'll use the retailer as the contact point. The last time I contacted Naniwa directly there was a bit of a language barrier thing goin' on. I have no hope that anything will come of it though.

My Chosera 800 gets thin, dark lines in it after it has soaked... even if it isn't used, just soaked. I can't help but wonder if one of these is going to develop into a similar fracture.

.
It would me as well. When I soak my King I see a line of bubbles coming from the surface about 3" long so I know mine has a fracture as well.

Mine is less than three months old and has a similar crack. It doesn't affect honing. I contacted the vendor and he (Mark) was very helpful and offered to replace it if it gets worse. This was three weeks ago. Still hones fine.

If the crack runs through to the top I'll just cut it or something.

I may replace this one with a Shapton Pro 1k. I have another 1k C, and was thinking I'd like to try the Shapton.
Not sure yet - still honing a wedge right now, moving to Tomo Nagura at the moment. I'll think on it afterwards.

At least it would make them aware there might be a problem with their stone.

+1

I'd email the vendor with pics. Here's mine.

Does that mean you're Posting and Honing? Is that safe? How many of you other guys Post and Hone? (Scott, don't answer. I know you do.)

I sent the vendor an email - the CA seems to have taken well enough and I lapped it down.
Ordered the Shapton 1k too - should be here before next weekend. It'll be nice to try a new 1k out.
This Chosera isn't out of service though - not yet anyway.
I received a suprise PM from a rarely seen or heard-from member, in it was a link about stablizing the stone onto a plexi sheet with epoxy.
Seems plausible - definitely food for thought.

Basically - yeah. Seems safe enough.
But I only stop to post when I'm moving from one stone to another.

I've had hairline cracks in my 1K chosera but I was able to lap them out. I soak mine for a couple of minutes before use and I used to let them dry out as fast as possible usually near a window in the draft. It seems the fast drying caused the cracks as the stone can swell and shrink with moisture and if you dry them fast the shrinking can cause cracks as the outside dries while the inside is still wet.
Now when I'm done with them I dry them of with a microfiber cloth and wrap this cloth, still damp around the stone. This helps drying the stone more slowly and evenly, I haven't seen any cracks since then.
The superstones swell and shrink even worse than the chosera's, so bad they don't stay completely flat when the moisture content changes but their softer binder seems more forgiving against cracking. I only have one dual grit superstone that's partly separated at the glue line.

Mine sit out to dry - not near heat or ventilation though.
I like the idea of controlled drying.
