Cost for Super Iridiums

Question for you guys- there is a guy selling Super Iridiums on ebay for $50 per 100 or best offer (tried 40 and he turned it down). Is this a decent price? thanks, Frank:blink:

When the product becomes rare the price goes up! These blades are made in St. Petersburg yes? There must be similar blades being run in that factory and they stick different brand names on them. All those blade brands they make were once made in other countries but now they are all made in P.P.I. I have read somewhere. There are different grades of steel and then the coated types.
Is it possible that some other brand is made on the machinery that Super Iridiums were made on? Why did they stop producing Super Iridiums? They seem to be the holy grail of DE blades from what I hear. Does anybody have more information on P.P.I.? What kind of runs do they do and how do they gauge the market for each brand. This I would love to know. I'd love to visit that plant for one day and see the whole thing in action!

It appears that the 'newer' generation of SIs are now being manufactured in Poland (perhaps they always were, and the St. Petersburg name was more of their distributor, rather than manufacturer. The SI name is now owned by Polsilver, and all new SIs go under the name "Polsilver SIs." A number of people (including myself) have compared the new SIs to the original SIs with varying results. As a dedicated "classic" SI user, I could tell almost no differences between the two in terms of shaving quality.

It's not a newer generation, it is only the old one rebranded. The Polsilver and Iridium Super were originally made by Wizamet (Poland) before Gillette take over and send the production in Russia. The way I see it, Gillette just decided to finally eliminate the Wizamet name and only kept the 'Polsilver' because it is well known. If you recall, they did the same with Oldspice by eliminating the name Shoulton. Nothing personal, just good business.:euro:

Stay with the reputed vendors from this forum i.e. Emilio or "Gifts and Care" (both Spain) before venturing to evilbay... there are fake Iridiums around and trying to save 10 bucks can be more expensive in the end if you don't get the 'real deal'. Think about it.

The Polsilver blades were introduced in Poland in the 1970's and made in Wizamet factory. Polsilver Super Iridium were introduced as the higher-tier blade over the Polsilver Stainless. Over the years, the Polsilver Stainless and SI/PSI have been sold concurrently with several different packagings of both, with the Super Iridiums sometimes being sold without the Polsilver brand. Gillette had bought the Wizamet factory in the 90's and then around 2005, production of the blades was moved to St. Petersburg. Around 2010, distribution changed to Procter & Gamble Poland and the combined Polsilver Super Iridium was used once again (vintage Polsilver Super Iridiums from Wizamet - top right blade in pic). Also, at one point there was a blade made in the Czech Republic that went under the Polsilver Super Iridium name which apparently had some quality issues.

Excellent informative coverage!

What is interesting to me is why Gillette stopped making the new Polsilvers just after a couple of months. As far as I know this is what happened.

No blade is worth $50 per 100

There are some excellent blades available far cheaper.

I was prepared to pay that much to satisfy my curiosity. It's expensive compared to other options, but some other highly recommended blades are not that far off (Feather, Gillette Black, Personna Med Prep). It's still inexpensive in terms of cost per shave.

I think I paid $.46 per blade for quantity 250. It's cool having a good NOS blade but I agree that there are several comperable blades a less than half the price. The SI's are reliable trade bait though.
