What's new

Cosa Nostra.

The Mafia,,,

It's got something that draws us in, can't put my finger on it but I'm fascinated by them.

I'd imagine if I was a kid hanging around em I'd feel kinda special. Maybe special is not the word but you know what I mean. Wouldn't wanna be involved in all the bad stuff but there's some stuff that I admire.

For one if you need to get a job done, they can do it for you instead of all the red tape and corruption you gotta go through when you deal with big business and politicians, sometimes they're just as corrupt.

I also admire their ability to adapt, this is their greatest attribute. Through all the years they can change and adapt.

Don't get me wrong, I'm not condoning their behaviour just it seems to draw people in and interest them, I just don't know how to put it?

They have produced great films about them over the years and the documentry's are amazing.

Why are they so popular but at the same time shunned by society. Is there some good that people see in them or is it just the glamour, lifestyle and characters?

There is nothing romantic about organized crime. Movies and television makes them out to be some type of heroes but they still operate outside the law and commit crimes. I see nothing appealing about this lifestyle.

I once had a teacher suggested that we watch TV because the people on there do things that we can't/won't. Perhaps the 'Mafia' (particularly as portrayed in cinema) articulates some of our own feelings that would be improper/illegal/immoral/what-have-you. Mobsters solve their problems with guns and violence, and they do so with seemingly little consequence. There are often situations in daily life where something inside me would like to do likewise. Now, being the sane, moral being that I am, I would never act on those thoughts. I think the romanticism of organized crime comes from how it allows an outlet for us to, perhaps, express some of our frustrations by living vicariously through those characters.

Then again, maybe I'm just pulling this outa my arse.

Maybe so but they captivate many.

I know Hollywood glams it up, I'm not that naive.

Big Business and sometimes politicians operate outside the law but don't hold the same fascination?

+1. The Yakuza are no better IMO.

I agree whole heartedly, but I do understand the fascination that Kenno has with the mafia. However, as you pointed out that is likely due to the glamorizing of organized crime in movies and television. When you get into the real history of gangsters and the mafia it isn't nearly as pretty a sight. I truly was a vile filthy underworld.

The Mafia is SO last decade...now, it's all about vampires, sheesh...:001_rolle

Go to your local library and and get the transcriptions, I can't remember the name of the book, of the wire tap tapes. They're pretty interesting and in a couple, Frank Sinatra was discussed as being killed.

I've had some distant brushes with the Irish Mob, walking past a store and seeing a guy that I know for a fact is connected and a coke dealer (and just general scum), frantically trying to explain something to two short stout Irish gentlemen leaning against a silver Cadillac who looked none too amused. It was a sad and kind of funny sight, because this guy is 6'6" probably 325lbs with red hair and beard and he looked like he was about to mess his pants talking to these small pitbull-like men. I didn't stick around long enough to find out what happened.

Definitely not something to get mixed up in, but I'll be damned if Goodfellas and Casino aren't two of my favorite movies of all time. ;-)

Yeah, I think I saw that on a doco somewhere, was shocking to hear that as I always thought they got along. Probably used one another. Some of those wire tapes are amazing, they talk such a viscious game, but in public they are completely different.

I have a book called the history of the Cosa Nostra, it says it all started cause they wanted to get their lemons and fruits overseas and they were having trouble doing that so a new era was born. Somtimes when a government is corrupt it forces the people to take action into their own hands and unfortunately the rule of law can go out the window. I could have turned out all different if this was not the case?

The crafty ones you don't even know they exist, they live in modest homes, wear modest even poor clothes, very crafty.

The mafia even had a hand in bringing down mussolini, mostly because he was after them. They have a funny way of surviving.
