Corvette Vintage Shaving Soap

Just copped this off of ebay. It's a vintage British soap. Anyone ever heard of it? I sure haven't.

Cool bowl, too! :thumbup1:

And another view. Blue soap!

I'm assuming it hasn't arrived yet, but here's hoping the scent is intact. Blue soap? If it lathers half as well as the Wilkinson's stick of the same color, you're in for a great shave.

No, it arrived yesterday. I took these pics this morning.

The scent seems to be intact. Honestly, I didn't pay too much attention to it -- I was kinda distracted by the bowl. :w00t: My fleeting impression of the scent was that it seemed kind of "cologne-y."

It IS an awesome bowl, isn't it? The size and shape look perfect to accommodate just about any soap (if you ever use it up!).

I had a Corvette set a while back, while topically it was blue and in the sea, mine was a fairly nice fougère scent. If I remember correctly it was a NY distributor.

You have some in your shave den.

Find out how it shaves, and you tell us.

Or are you planning on putting that puck in a museum?

ok, OK, fercryinoutloud... I only got the darn thing yesterday! It was only a question. Yeesh...

I shall indeed use it and report back. And THEN I'll put it in a museum. :w00t:

Evan, it did shave nicely- The aftershave was very good also. The crust on the soap was a challange.

If this was the auction with the seller from Great Britain, I was a bidder on it but not serious enough to bid much for an unknown product. Glad to hear that someone on the forum won the auction.

Found this on Perfume Intelligence:

UK. Douglas Collins & Co Ltd established in 1932 with Buzz Stevens, factory at Great College St, Campden Town, London also in Mayfair, London; company closed in 1935, but retained rights to 'Jaeger Braken'; produced first phial perfume in 1937; re-launched own business in 1936 under the name 'La Fontaine'; expanded and changed name to Douglas R.Collins Ltd in 1937 and change perfumery name to Goya un-aware of the famous Spanish artist of the same name. Amalgamated with J.C. and J Field Ltd in 1952; sold out to Reckitt & Sons in 1962. Bought Goya back in 1964 with his son Christopher in charge; Douglas Collins died suddenly aged 59 in 1972; In 1975 business sold to I.C.I.

Used the Corvette this morning.

I'm happy to say this is a classic vintage soap, in the best sense of the word. The soap was easy to lather and the lather itself was near-perfect. Dense, creamy & protective, yet still just slippery enough. I had a most enjoyable, 3-pass shave. A good start to my Friday morning!

Scent-wise, I didn't notice much. There was of course that muted, crayon-like scent that I've come to associate with old, tallow-based soaps. Didn't really notice anything more than that, though there might have been just the faintest ghost of its original fragrance.

All in all, I'm very happy with my purchase. If you guys ever see one of these soaps, do yourself a favor & grab it! :thumbup1:
