I get bad irritation whenever I put on a new blade. I do not have any corks or styrofoam is there another material I can use which will not significantly damage the integrity of the blades?

don't have any in the house right now. I want to change blade but always get Irration on the first shave on a new blade. Was wondering if maybe cardboard or leather?
Try palm stropping the blade and see if that takes care of the initial roughness. I have had some success doing this with single edge blades which I always find a bit too aggressive when new.

I've heard of people stropping on jeans or towels or newspaper. I'd probably try some pieces of washable, cheap cloth or a towel you don't care about. The idea of palm stropping strikes me as another way to get nicked or cut (I have never tried it, though).

Just use jeans or a towel. Many guys jeans strop their blades to increase the blade life. Just 4-5 strokes on each side ought to do it.
