What's new

Considering replating: Where do you draw the line?

Thinking about this for the '59 Fat Boy. It's is very good condition ans works like a charm. But with that darkening/brassing look along the handle and base, just from years of use and shaving.

Pics wouldn't help help here because you can barely see the brass--it just looks darker and worn.

I like the vintage vibe but I love the shine on my Slim and Flair Tip.

What would you guys do?

Seems like you already know what you want. get it plated man, it'll be SUPER shiny! Done in Rhodium it will last forever.

You can choose what ever plating you wish. Rhodium, Nickel, Chrome, Gold, Rose Gold, Black Chrome, Black Nickel, Black Rhodium, Platadium... Lot of choices.

Since it will be a replated/restored razor sticking with the original finish is not important. Go with what you want it to look like and then just enjoy it.

Here is a Chrome plated FB that was donated by a B&B member to the fundraiser.

There are two members on here that I know of that do replating, Dave (Onotoman) in the UK, and Krona Cruiser in the US. I'm a happy customer of Dave's.

Thanks much guys. They ARE purty!

I forget what site I was on a while back but there was some talk about extra care and maintenance of different metal finishes. Or maybe that was just for silver and gold…I forget.

Hi Ron,

It's all to do with the hardness of the plating material really:

Rhodium, Chrome (including black chrome) and Bright Nickel will stand up to abrasive polishes like Brasso etc, but for Silver and Gold, soap and water, or the odd polish with silver wadding is better.

Once replated, a wash with soap and water once a month is all that should be necessary. Silver will tarnish if not polished or at least handled regularly but a quick buff with silver wadding or polishing cloth will do the trick.

Hope this helps

Best Wishes

Dave

Just had my President done(pic below) and looks great. Luckily my Fatboy is mint so that's a way's away. Oh and personally I'd have it replated in rhodium if the Fatboy is your go to razor as the price of that precious metal isn't going down in the near future. besides rhodium shines like nothing else!
