Cologne Samples

Probably already posted, but do you guys know a good site that would like you buy/offer free samples of creed, penhaligons, musgo, versace, hugo boss? thanks

Mudassir is a fine gentleman and I highly recommend him for obtaining decants. Fragrances are his hobby, and his passion for them is similar to the passion many of us have for wet-shaving.

Don't most department stores (Nordstrom's, Lord & Taylor, Macy's) have little sample vials? I have been given some (without asking), so I don't know if they only have a few, or if they have samples of most of what they sell.

Most samples are available for free. They are also available from the perfume house as well. Before you buy, check availability locally and via email.

As far as I remember, Penhaligon's are the only ones that will send you a few samples for free. Others charge a small fee to cover their shipping charges. L'Artisans Parfumer will sent up to 5 samples for $7. Czech and Speake had sent me also a very nice complete set for free, but supposedly they may also charge now a small fee. I think it is a great idea to spend a few bucks for some samples before dropping major $$$ on a bottle you may not like eventually. Also, contact Cambridge Chemists, they have free sampling program, and one can get some of the Creeds from there.

The Trumper's sample kit is also very reasonably priced (I think you might just pay the postage). The Czech and Speake kit is also awesome!

I've received free samples directly from GFT, Penhaligon's and C&S. Colonial Drug always sends huge selections of samples when you order from them too. Most department stores are very generous with selections too. My local Nordstroms always comes through, and l'Occitane does too. The samples that the Creed rep at Saks filled for me were so large that I was almost embarrassed to take them. Almost.

You might have to do a little legwork, but be creative. If you like something, go directly to the source.

I must be doing something seriously wrong. I have never been given a free sample at a department store (Macy's, Saks, Nordstrom) and I shop alot and have asked quite a few times. I don't look like a bum either but it has never worked for me. I was just in L'Occitane the other day as well and asked about samples of 2 different scents, the sales guy practically laughed at me.

Don't be afraid to ask. I have asked at both stores and they are usually generous about the samples. I have even given back samples that I had no interest in.

I just got 4 samples at Nordstrom. They didn't have any manufacturer's sampls, so she made them herself, squirting a little into the tiny vials. I was very impressed. I got two D&G's, Varvatos Vintage and Armani Diamond.

gone down south

You can't just go in with your hand extended :)
Chat with the sales associate, ask their recommendations, spend a few minutes browsing their products, then say you need to think it over and ask if you can have some samples of a couple things. I can't imagine anyone saying no at that point.

I went to a few places and asked, like Macys, and they didn't have any, but I always said "There's a few scents that were recommended to me, and I'd like to try them out for a day before buying any."

Makes sense to me. You definitely don't get a good feel for any of them when sniffing each one at the counter. I think you really need to try it on and smell it all day to really know if you like it or not.

Same here - I struck up a nice conversation with the Macy's SA but unfortunately she informed me, after a lot of digging and feedback, that a lot of manufacturers and their reps are more selfish with samples these days - the economy, of course. Although I can understand this at an operational level, not ready to say this is true from a marketing level. So, off to the other high end stores I go.

Unfortunately samples at department stores have been scarce. It has nothing to do with the economy. And, nothing to you at all texbilly, I've just been hearing that copout for two years now. It's crap. The economy is what you make it. You spend. Not, you, per say; you in a general sense.

Anyway. Here's my philosophy on samples at department stores...

Some bean counting idiot says it is costing them too much money.

Let's keep the math simple. Why? I suck at math, that's why.

A sample costs the company .50 out the door.

A bottle of cologne makes them $10 profit.

They make colognes cheaper now with no staying power and only grab your *** by the heels decent top notes that allure you. However, twenty minutes later after the top notes subside the scent is gone. You; spray more. You use more. Quickly. You buy more.

Now, if you take that sample home and notice this, you are not going to buy the larger bottle, thus, they spend 50 cents to lose $10.

Now, looking even more so on the scents with the greatest staying power. MOST consumers shop in a gotta-get-it-now-fashion. If they have more than five minutes to mull over their decision they decline. Bearing that in mind a sales associate's primary goal is to get them to buy it right now. They cannot take back an opened package. Sales associate and everyone has made their money. The only one not happy is the consumer. She throws a "sell it on ebay" line at the consumer as a fix-all.

The company made $10 and it didn't cost them 50 cents. They analyze how many 50 cents they throw out there to make $10 and to them it is not worth it. Say you got 4 samples. That is $2 they spent as a company. Now, IF you do go back and buy something, their profits went down to $8.
