Cologne/EdT & Travel

I travel a great deal due to work, usually staying in any one place no more then one night. As a result I rarely check my bag. When I was just using samples passing through security wasn't an issue. Now that I've started buying bottles of cologne/Edt it's becoming a problem. I'm wondering how others handle getting their scents through the TSA screening. Do you decant the scents you take with you?

Thanks,

Thanks,

If you tell the TSA person that your flacon of Creed Windsor is worth $605, they will take it away from you.

You can easily pick up small bottles (with atomizers) at places like Whole Foods. Sephora and The Body Shop also have inexpensive atomizers. It's a piece of cake to decant a little and carry it like that.

decanting to small spray bottle kills scent. i just wait until i run down to 1/4 bottle of my trumper's sandalwood cologne & set aside & take one in my carry on briefcase. been doing it for years without any questions asked even when inspected.

How did you arrive at this conclusion regarding decanting?

Also, it's my understanding that TSA will confiscate any bottle over 3oz from your carry on regardless of how full they are.

The new regulations allow up to 3.4oz/100ml

They are too busy protecting us to update the picture, best of good luck explaining to the highly trained TSA professionals the difference between 3 ounces in a picture and 3.4 ounces in text.

your best bet is to bring 1 oz of your preferred scent with you. anything over that and they're likely to act absurd about it and jump all over the opportunity for free cologne.

I once had screeners demand that I throw away my bottle of water, but they let me through with my Swiss Army knife. true story. of course, I was flying out of Czech Republic!

I didn't know I could get small bottles with atomizers, that's exactly what I'll do.

I find the rules are not uniformly and consistently followed. I lost a razor because I forgot to remove the blade. They were not very receptive to my explanation that the blade could be removed and I could keep the razor. Now I buy a pack blades locally.

Thanks!

re: decanting;
i used to transfer cologne from a 1.7 oz spray bottle to a small glass sample phial with a spray attachment & the scent would dissipate during the transfer. i no longer bother. i just carry mostly used up bottles of cologne. i only take what i need for the trip.

re: tsa & fluids;
tsa used to require that fluids be displayed in zip lock bags. i do not see anyone pulling out ziplock bags at security anymore. since then, i always carry fluids in my carry on briefcase including eye drops, decongestant & the original cologne bottle with 1/4 of the cologne remaining. i would say i average about 4 ounces of fluid per trip in a ziplock inside my carry on briefcase & have not removed the ziplock nor been hassled. i have flown maybe 1.5 flights per month on average both nationally & internationally for the past two years without any problems. maybe, 1/4 of those flights are with carry on luggage only & all i do is pack my regular amount of toiletries in ziplocks which is many ounces of toothpaste, shampoo, cough syrup, sun screen, shaving cream of course, etc. & all condensed down to either travel sized containers or mostly used up original containers. sometimes tsa does look in my suitcase & pulls out the ziplocks, puts them back & nothing is said. my attitude is if tsa wants to take my fluids then it is fine by me since it is all replaceable & only pack enough of what i need per trip. i often fly standby internationally & can not afford to check my suitcase in case i can not get on the flight. if my juice is confiscated i can buy more or have the original at home. furthermore, i am one of those people who always seem to be pulled aside for extra screening.

I'd take a bottle thats 1.0oz-1.7oz and hope that the TSA is too preoccupied with "confiscating" my cash from the screening bin

I too decant into small atomizer bottles. My wife has occassionally found moistened towlette pack-like sample cologne or hand face wipes-colognes and they went thru without a problem. Caswell Massey sells sample packs a with 8 or so colognes that are the perfect travel size.

I went into The Body Shop looking for atomizers and fortunately they were out. Walked over to Sephora, everything they had for sale was larger then I wanted. The SA at Sephora was kind enough to give me a dozen of the disposable (?) plastic atomizers they use for samples.

Thanks for the advice!
