What's new

Cold weather has squashed my current shave routine

I came from sunny FLA to awesome mega cold Korea. It's maybe 20deg right now as we speak. My shave routine in hot weather is simple, and it worked. Now, after the first shave of the week my face never recovers and shaves for the rest of the week well... suck. Even with brand new blades and supreme attention to pressure and speed I get weepers and irritation. I know my lather is spot on, and regardless of soap or razor the end of the week is the same. Sore and red.

Shower, shave, hot water, cold water, WH, and as of late CHL. Then a little AS but not too much. Periodically through the day I use the CHL to keep up with the moisture. I just started doing that yesterday.

Guess I really need to stay on top of the moisturizer for the face through the day.

Welcome to my life 8 months of the year.
I find that even though I started wet shaving in the summer, I still have my ups and downs with technique. I get lazy and have some bad shaves. Think about all your technique again, go over the basics. You might catch something amiss.
Also, yes, the cold can do a number on your skin. Gotta stay moisturized! I am not sure how to do it perfectly yet, but I am getting better. I am staying away from my products that tend to dry my skin, and staying away from an alcohol splash.
Best of luck.

Ah Korea in the winter. If my memory serves me right the wind is very unforgiving. I would say shave a bit earlier, give yourself a few minutes (10-15) before you go outside and try to cover your face maybe with a neckgaitor or a baclava.

right about the wind, and I am rocking the neck gaiter already. I would probably get mild frostbite by the time I got to work if I didn't!!

Try a more moisturizing aftershave. A heavy duty balm or something.

+1, and look into a moisturizing cream to keep around during the day.

Also, this is definitely a time when something like MWF or Cella or Provence Sante would come in handy for daily use.

My prep has to be altered for the winter season compared to the summer season. I use menthol based soaps/creams during the summer. However for the winter I need a moisturizing cream like RSC without menthol. After that I use e-shave aftershave moisturizing cream and this is what helps me. There is a bit more prep time for me during the winter season.

I think I have gotten it figured out, and actually my daily soap is Cella already! I have been lubing up pretty good with some JASON aloe vera cream and CHL during the course of the day. I was feeling fishy so I shaved with the straight both Sat and today and it was actually nicer than using the DE. Not nearly as close, but I wasn't exactly trying either. Less margin for catastrophic error there.

It may sound like a bad idea to throw in menthol to an already cold situation, but I have been using cella followed by Proraso pre/post as a balm followed by Proraso splash for the last two weeks in a Canadian cold snap (-25 to -30).
