Clenching a clay pipe

I been smoking this one clay pipe I have a lot the last month or so and clenching quite a bit. I guess mostly because I don't care about scratching it up with teeth marks like my other pipe I clench more than usual with it. It feels pretty solid and I'm not worried enough about biting through it to stop, but the thought that it might happen one day still lingers in the back of my head.

So I'll ask, has anyone here ever bit through a clay pipe while smoking it? Was it horrible? Embers and whatnot all over the place?

im afraid to clench my little clay pipe, but not because im afraid to break it it feels like it would break my teeth lol at least wear the enamel down like biting on piece of glass but its just a cheap little thing

Fridays are Fishtastic!
I'd worry more about your teeth than the pipe.
Not long ago, someone posted pics of skulls that came from the time when clay pipes were the norm. You could tell who the pipe smokers were from the wear on the teeth.

That's what made me suggest it, I was too lazy to find the post to link. Seems like we have a common problem.:biggrin1:

That was years of a clay as the only pipe they had though. I'll be long dead before I have to worry about that.

It still probably isn't great on my teeth, but I am going to do it anyway. Until I get a clay pipe that will take a softie. Unless anyone knows something that will fit this one. It's about as big around as a pencil.

Cant you put a rubber thing on the end (not a condom i know you were hoping to make the comment) i know a regular pipe saver wouldnt work but must be somthing you can drop on it help save your pipe and your teeth and maybe more comfortable too, yes no ?

How about one of those pencil softie grip things?

you can also dip the ends in wax - though put something into stem just to avoid wax going inside stem & clogging it. I used to dip my clays into the wax used for sealing letters etc - I preferred this as I didn't like the grittiness of the clay on my teeth AND especially when I broke the stem as it helps protect from the sharp breaking point on stem. seem to recall some shorter clays on ebay or somewhere that looked like they were pre-dipped in wax (actually that's what gave me the idea to do so)

Haven't smoked a clay pipe in many years, though they provide a very very cool smoke as you know. and I used to use them to taste pure varietals from C&D when I dabbled in homeblending. Only glass pipe gives a purer taste of the leaf.

ive only ever seen 1 type of blend in a glass pipe lol, was wondering if people used them for tobacco purposes though, specially since all the signs on the windows to the local head shop say for tobacco purposes only

i like the wax thing though, plus my sure to be dissasterous results will make for a good thread

if only duct tape could tape ducts then it would be able to do everything I'm going to try the wax thing tonight ignoring I can find a candle that isn't scented like something

Thought it would be a different type of wax for that. Candle wax seems like it would be too soft.

Probably would be, would be like them old wax lips, ill have to see what i have laying around, i had some emerbency candles that were around somewhere, they were made harder to burn a lot longer but may be still to soft for a five dollar pipe i could experiment, plus the wax would melt back off easy enough if it didnt work

People actually smoke tobacco out of those things?

that's how the blenders taste their different varietals - Greg Pease turned me onto it a number of years back. of course not the fancy $300-$500 dollar ones used for another of God's gifts to humanity.... <wink> but the cheap, easily cleaned and small ones....

do yourself a favor, and pick a glass pipe up and you'll get flavors out of your favorite blends you never knew existed! though, like with clays, the glass gets HOT! and you want a clean pipe for each blend you'll try. it's a purer taste than even clay with no blend memory found in briars and meers (and no break in needed as with a new briar)

silly but true!
