Cleaning After Shave

I know some of you recommend an old tooth brush for after the shave, but I am afraid it is dulling my blade. Simple rinsing doesn't seem to get all the cream off the blades, though. What do the rest of you do?

No matter what type of razor you are talking about (you didn't mention), straight, DE or SE - I can't see anyone recommending that you clean it with a toothbrush when the blade is in it (DE or SE) or on a straight.

Just rinsing is fine, followed by a gentle wipe with a towel for DE or SE, and a wipe on a towel then strop for a straight.

With your DE or SE, an infrequent spritz with scrubbing bubbles (no blade installed) followed by a gentle scrub with a toothbrush will keep it in great shape.

Don't get a toothbrush near a sharp razor edge. It is not good for either the toothbrush, or the razor edge.

Good luck!!

Other than an occasional swipe on a towel while changing the blade, my razor cleaning routine is to hit it with Scrubbing Bubbles about every 6 months or so then rinse with hot water.

I scrub my DE razors with and old toothbrush when I change blades. Every six months or so, I'll boil them and give them a thorough polish.

I shake mine around pretty vigorously in the water-filled sink then rinse under the tap at the end - seems to get everything off.

If you have cream on your blade after rinsing, your cream is way to dry. A simple rinse after shaving should get all the cream off of your razor. After serious deposits and build up is on your razor, that would be the time to hit it with a TB. Welcome to B&B.

I always have a film on my razor that doesn't come off with just rinsing. Is that what your using the towel to wipe off or does that mean my cream is too dry as well?

I've never tried to clean a razor with the blade still in it...yikes. :w00t: I just give my razors a quick wipe when I change the blades.

Whether my cream is wet or dry, it always leaves a cloudy residue on my razor that is very visible on the head and rubbing it with a towel does not cleanse it. It took lysol yesterday to get it off.

This pretty much covers things. The only thing different that I do is after I've rinsed my razor, I loosen the head a slight amount to create a gap between the head and the blade. Then I rinse it again under hot water, tighten the head back down, give the razor a couple shakes and sharp flicks, and hang it up to air dry. That slight gap allows the blade to move a bit to let the hot water get out any built up gunk. :thumbup1:

You may have hard water, I used to have that problem until I got a water softener.

rinse the razor well then shake all the water from it that you can. if there is soap residue on the razor head, wipe it off with a towel and every couple of days, spritz the razor blade with some isopropyl alcohol to keep things germ free. when i toss the blade, i use scrubbing bubbles and a toothbrush to clean it up

I do have hard water. Actually quite possibly the nation's hardest. The hot water comes out looking like green tea.

I think I am going to go buy some some gallon jugs of water now.

Sound like maybe you need to drain your hot water heater if the water is coming out discolored. Usually, a lot of sediment builds up in the bottom of the hot water heater tank, especially if you have hard water deposits. A once a year draining :thumbup1:will help keep the water clean and save the life of the hot water heater.

See if this works first....:thumbup1:

Cheers.

I am a wierd duck but I rinse with hot water after use, and than place the head of the razor with blade in some rubbing alochol. I let it soak for few minutes and the use a pressurized aeresol can to blowout it dry. It gets rid of the soap residue.

I live in privatized base housing. It's worse than some projects I've seen. My water heater leaks and they won't replace it. But I'm moving in one month anyway. I will keep this in mind for the future though so thanks.

I think I remember seeing in one of your previous posts that you use brushless creams. These require a lot of rinsing to come clean and can really gunk up a razor. You'll have to take the blade out and clean the razor. Don't clean it with the blade in it.

That, my friend, sounds like hard water deposits. There's not a great deal that can be done easily. I've got the same problem. It's just cosmetic, though.

I do a hot water rinse after every shave. If needed, I will wipe the top of my DE Merkur as it can get scummy. Every weekend, I disassemble the razor, soak it in hot water first, and then soak it in Scrubbing Bubbles (ensures I get a disinfecting once per week). I use an old tooth brush to clean the razor with the Bubbles. I then rinse it and dry it...it works awesome! I also soak my brush in hot, soapy water and clean it at the base with the toothbrush. Thus far, it seems to work well. :thumbup1:
