Cleaned My Brush — What A Difference!

I bought my T&H silvertip brush a couple of months ago, and I love it. However, my brush doesn't love the hard water here in Chicago. I noticed some stiffening of the bristles, and that it didn't hold water or lather quite as well as when I got it. There was also a ugly layer of soap scum on the handle. I'm used to the soap scum problem: I clean my razor every week to keep it shiny. So last night I realized it was time to clean the brush.

After reading a lot of conflicting posts here about brush cleaning, some suggesting borax, some suggesting vinegar, I decided upon a two-pronged approach of my own. For the bristles, I used a pea-sized dab of the same shampoo I use on my hair. Rinsed it very well in warm water, then used a bit of Dawn dish soap and a toothbrush to scrub the scum off the handle.

The result: a like-new brush. The handle looks clean again, and the bristles feel the same as the day I bought it. Great lather today, and that wonderfully soft silvertip feel on my face. Also, not a single hair was shed during the cleaning process.

I'll probably repeat this cleaning once every month or so, unless someone here thinks shampoo on a silvertip badger brush is a bad idea. Seems like it worked pretty well.

Good to know! I also have hard water and was just reading on how a scumed up brush can make it harder for later to be released. I will be doing this to all my brushes shortly, thanks for the tip.

I get 60 days between cleaning. Shampoo followed by a two day drying time works for me. Good luck with your new cleaning regiment.

Is the drying time important? Does a brush really benefit from a rest or is it just a safety precaution?

Being a bit lazy this morning, I cleaned my brush before I shaved by lathering it up on my glycerin face soap (Neutrogena unscented facial bar), gently rubbing the lather into the brush and around the base, then rinsing. I think it did as good a job as my usual Dawn and vinegar rinses in a fraction of the time.

What do you clean the razor with? I have soap scum on it and wish to make it shiny again.

I've just used Dawn dish soap and a soft-bristled tooth brush for the razor. I do it often enough that I haven't needed the Scrubbing Bubbles yet, but that is also a good idea especially if you've got a lot of build-up.

An old toothbrush and a little toothpaste does it for mine. Comes up nice and shiny in no time.
The shaving brush comes back to life with a little shampoo and conditioner every 3 months or so. The water is very hard in my area.

And the razor said to the brush- "Gee, your hair smells terrific!"

There is a cleaner sold at Trader Joe and Target in a green plastic bottle. My wife didn't like it since it has no bleach and didn't do a great job on sinks. It is all natural and supposedly safe for individuals as well. It DESTROYS soap scum on my razors.
I can't remeber the name but HIGHLY RECOMMEND.
