There is no doubt that we are currently experiencing a boutique cigar boom, and unlike the boom of the 90's I think this is a boom that is actually good for the smoker and the industry alike.
That being said, sometimes you just want to reach for a cigar that isn't a 3x70 size or trying to knock you on your butt with a quadrupedal ligero wrapper. A classic cigar makes you want to sit back and puff big billowy clouds of smoke, and not try to detect every nuance of 7 year old aged Madagascar vanilla. A classic cigar may be a brand that's pedigree goes back to the pre Castro days, or a post revolution Marca that just does it well.
When I think of a Classic Cigar my mind automatically goes to the Honduran Punch, and it's earthy leather, and espresso flavors. Punch's have a strength to them that makes this cigar an event; more just than something to pass the time.
I have a soft spot for the Punch Marca and specifically the Punch Rothschild. It was my first "real" cigar, one that wasn't flavored or wrapped with tobacco paper. I sat outside at my parents house on the lower deck and smoked it one evening when everyone else was out. Somewhere around the halfway point of the cigars I'm sure my face turned green because I was kneeling in the bushed dry heaving. There are only a couple events where I remember exactly what cigar I was smoking when it happened, but this is one of them.
A. Fuente is another. A classic Dominican cigar well balanced and smooth. No matter where you go if walk into a B&M their guaranteed to have at least a couple Fuentes.
I don't reach for either of these 2 cigars as often with the recent influx of new offerings to hit store shelves, but it's nice to know that when I want one they'll still be around, and still just as good.
