cigar smoke vs leather jacket

As a new father, I'm trying to keep my child untouched by smoke or it's odors. There's some significant statistics that link second hand smoke (and even being held by a smoker) to SIDS. Crazy right?

So, I've been going for the smoking jacket thing, then showering right after smoking. The feeling of having to disinfect myself after smoking a cigar has kept me from smoking for a few months now -- but I'm likely to start having a cigar again once in a while any day now (like a reverse addicts, "I can start again, whenever I want to. Really!"

Long intro, but my main question is how would using my favorite leather jacket as a smoking jacket affect the leather? I'd like to think it'll season it in some way -- to be positive. I'm afraid, however, that it could somehow damage it.

I care for the jacket, keeping it clean, wiping it down once in a while and treating it with an oil mixture once or twice a year (usually beginning and end of the wearing season).

Very crazy. Unbelievably crazy.

As far as leather, the smoke won't damage it, per se; but the smell may be nearly impossible to remove. Smoke clings to leather like nobody's business, so if you want to wear the garment again without being reminded of last month's stogie, you may want to find another material.

Leather is great stuff with just minimal care it goes on forever. I have a leather jacket I bought 25 years ago. . . I wear it regularly in the snow and rain and it still looks very good. I've replaced the lining twice . . . kinda like another thread here where people are talking about resoling their shoes. I don't smoke but I'd not have any concern about the leather.

What Rob said.

The first time I quit smoking, I noticed about six months later when it got cold again that my horsehide A-2 leather jacket reeked of old cigarette smoke. Man, it was bad. Of course, a lot of that was probably in the lining of the jacket, and you can get those re-lined.

If you amble over to Vintage Leather Jackets forum and ask those guys, I'm sure somebody can give you all the 411. I collect flight jackets in a small way, but those guys are heavy hitters and can tell you anything you want to know about leather jackets and their care. ( A lot of those guys wear original WWII flight jackets, some with original lining and some with re-linings. )

Is there anything that the internet can not answer. Who would have thought that there was a vintage leather jacket forum!

Wood smoke has been used as a way to cure leather in the distant past. Smoke won't hurt it, but you'll probably never be able to get it 100% cleaned of it.

I can't believe that you're on a forum for people with every imaginable acquisition disorder and you're thinking about repurposing an old jacket? A smoking jacket is the way to go.

You can also buy a smoking cap, or simply wear your favorite fez.

Now you're talking!

Keep it up. You won't have to worry about your jacket or your child.
