Chubby 2 Best VS Chubby 2 Super 3-band

Hey guys!

Planning on buying a real luxury brush and i really like Simpson. I recently bought a Duke 3 in Best with a really short loft (47mm) which i really like. It´s starting to break in nicely now. So.. i have been thinking about the Chubby´s.. The Simpson Best badger is really nice BUT how is the Super badger hair in 3-band? I have the T2 in two-band super, it´s nice but not AS nice as you should think for the $$$. I facelather 95 of 100 shaves, mostly with creams and soft soaps.

So i need some info/thoughts from you about the Chubby´s in best and super 3-band. Pictures with comparison is more than welcome! =)

Thanks!

Best regards, Michael.

I'm also interested in the experts' opinion. I've just got a Duke 3 in best and a Tulip T2 in super... And perhaps I HAVE to have a Chubby.

I just recently acquired a Polo 8 in super. So far I am a little disappointed and am starting to think I should have bought one in best not super.

Too soon to really tell. Another month or so should let me know. Right now it is put away so that I can come back to it fresh.

Not that this has anything to do with Chubby brushes as my only experience with that model is the Chubby1 which I sold when it came out equal to my Duke 2

Turtle, I'm very interested in knowing what specifically your disappointed with in the Super knot? Not soft enough, insufficient backbone, to dense, etc..?

I recently bought a Tulip 2 in super and not impressed. It is marginally softer than best, if at all, but with less backbone and a tendency to be floppy. I love Simpsons best and 2-band but I think their super 3-band is a step down, especially considering the $$$.

Depends on how lucky you get. You could get a Chubby 2 in best that is a knot that you can't tell apart from a super knot. You may even get a super that has a touch of prickle. The hair can vary a lot between batches.

If you want a chubby 2, order one where you can see the brush nice and close or directly through Simpson. It's the only way you can make sure you are getting the brush you want.

My experience has been that my best grade brush was softer than my super one. As a result, the super one has gone.

There can be a large variation with Simpson knots. You can end up with a Best that is indistinguishable from a Super. Other times the difference between the two grades is so marginal that Super may not be worth the extra money. Or you may get a monster Super. It's best to see the brush before you buy. As far as I know, the only online vendor you can do this with is The Superior Shave. They photograph each individual brush, so you can pick the actual knot you are buying.

I really can't put my finger on it yet. Have not had it long enough. Loft? Density? Not sure what about it seems off to me. Probably should not have said anything yet. I usually don't formulate an opinion right away with brushes. I know in the past, brushes that I was not impressed with in the beginning have turned out to be my favorites later on

The batches of Best vary quite a lot one from another, some are softer and very close to the Super 3 band while other are a bit on the scritchy side with coarser and darker hair. The Super 3 band is always a selected grade with almost snow white tips and a luxurious silky soft feeling. Of course there's no "better" choice, it's all a personal preference. I love the Best (any batch) and adore the Super...

Hi Marco, i know that you really like the Duke 3, i'm a little afraid that that the Chubby 2 will behave like the Duke 3 for some reason.. i love my Duke 3 but i want them to be different. Thoughts? :)

Here's your comparison pic:

I have had two CH2 Bests, one of which had darker tips and was a little misshapen (not in the pic). My current CH2 Best is a good example of Best and noticeably different than Super. I find my Super to be more densely packed, more fan-shaped, and softer on the tips. The Super hairs are finer, and the CH2 Super is a little more of a lather hog than the Best. Overall, I would describe the Super as more luxurious. The CH2 Best is an all-around excellent brush. I would have a hard time choosing between the two, which is why I haven't.

Wow! Nice lineup. How would you say the Chubby 2 band Super compares to the Best and 3 band Super?

The CH2 Super 2-band feels like a smaller brush than the 3-band CH2 because it blooms less. Also my 2-band CH2 is quite bulb shaped. Then there are the other typical differences between 2 and 3 band hair.

Your T2 is in Super 3-band, right? I have one in Super 2-band, and it's a great little brush that has virtually no flop. And it is definitely distinguishable by feel in use from my Simpsons in Best, both of which are terrific brushes, just different. I do believe, as others have observed, that there is a range of quality within the Simpson Best grade.

The Chubby 2 is like two Duke 3 put together! Seriously, the knot on my CH2 is 28mm while the D3 is 23mm and the Chubby is definitely denser with a lot more backbone. If this is what you're looking for, then pull the trigger.

Thank you! On friday i will buy the CH2 Best from Executive Shaving CO where i have a 12.5% discount code and the vendor will handpick one for me. =)
