Got the go ahead to get a new razor for Christmas. I currently have an EJ89, Maggard MR1, Merkur Slant. What do you recommend: Merkur Progress or Weber? (Just between these two please)
I have both and they are my two favorite razors . The weber is great but more particular about blades . The progress can use just about any blade and adjust you setting to it .
I've never had much luck with adjustable razors, so I am a bit biased. I have the Weber and love it. I've only tried it with 2 blades so far, GSB and Voshkod, but it has shaved well with both. I love the heft and feel of the Weber. The craftsmanship is outstanding. I ordered the longer Classic handle and couldn't be happier. For me, it's perfect.
I know lots of guys like the Progress too. It's a bit modern and bulky for my taste, but if if gives good shaves then it's a winner.
What is it about the EJ89 that you either don't like or want to improve on? I have both the Mergress (Progress) and the Weber. The Weber is new to me but it made a good impression on me on the first shave. It may be slightly more aggressive than the EJ but more importantly, it seems to be more efficient ... opinion based on one shave so take that for what it's worth. The Progress is an adjustable and you dial in the degree of aggression you are looking for.
Both my favorite razors as well, but the Mergress will probably never be kicked out of my #1 spot. I say Progress first (then Mergress upgrade if you like it), then get the Weber as your next gift.
Thanks all for your replies. I like the Weber for the SS look. Sounds like it's a smooth shaver too. But I like the adjustability factor of the Progress.
I have over a dozen razors and my Weber is the clear favorite. It combines comfort with closeness to a degree that none of the others can match. I also think that the price is right for a stainless steel razor.
i would take the weber any day over the ej89 personally. ive only borrowed a progress so i cant speak for long term use but i saw the ej89 mentioned and i would take a weber any day over that.
Progress. Much more versatile because of the adjustability and you can add stuff to it by way of metal adjustment knobs. 2 or 3 from companies no longer making the knobs but occasionally available and the Mergress, Digress conversations for the moment and maybe more later. I have a Weber as well and it is a long way down the rotation line form the Progress. As Doug would say, a lot of razor.
I have both Weber and Progress, vastly different razors....the Weber would be like the Progress dialed down towards the lowest settings. The Weber wins out if you want a mild but still efficient shaver and is stainless steel...its a one trick pony but a nice pony.
The Progress has good and bad aspects...great design and function but the metal underneath the plating isn't as high quality as the Weber, I see that as its biggest downfall. Its pretty aggressive on its hi settings so you may not ever use those either.
I'm not a fan of adjustables!
So i'm just to going to tell you this much, the progress has had some alignment and quality control issues. if you decide to pick the progress you might want to give it a thorough check.
