chanel5 for men?

I was digging through my closet and I found a bottle of chanel 5 it saysw cologne though, not parfum, does that make ita guys cologne or.....?

..

sure it's not the eau de toilette? all versions of No. 5 are for women, including past versions. however, Chanel has released eau de toilette versions of several of its older perfumes, including No. 5, No. 19, and Coco.

in any case, hold onto it. it's difficult to find No. 5 in eau de toilette form - and since i've never heard of it being a cologne, that may be even rarer (provided it's the real thing of course).

hmm that's unusual. well, if you ever get a chance, try and put it up here, I'd love to see it. looking for it on the internet, but haven't seen it labeled cologne, only eau de toilette. what does it smell like?

In answer to part of your original question, #5 is marketed toward women, but from looking at Basenotes, some men do wear it, as well.

There's a legend that one of the famous perfumers was asked how he turned a feminine scent into a masculine and he replied "I put 'Pour Homme' on the bottle."

There are frequently debates in Basenotes about who can wear what. In the end, if you like the way it smells on you, wear it.

good point.

my only reservation with No. 5 is its popularity with the ladies, spanning the better part of 100 years. since it's so easily recognizable and the most famous Chanel, I wouldn't be comfortable with it on. but then again, skin gender can do different things to the same scent . . .

ditto on wearing it if you like it, but be aware that women will recognize it pretty easily (and may find it humorous sniffing it off a guy), especially those aged 35 +

Absolutely true; many fragrances are shipped for the American market with little stick-on labels that say "pour homme" .

As for Chanel #5; I know of men who wear it. If you like it, wear it: fragrance has no gender....
