Cell Rot?

Thanks to a fine B&Ber, global dev, aka Jon, my Dad's Dubl Duck is honed and on its way back to me. However, he said the scales have cell rot and I should replace them. But that I would want to keep the bolsters. Now to show my ignorance: what are bolsters? How do I replace the scales? Where do I GET new scales? And where is Jimmy Hoffa buried?

The brass overlay on each end are sometimes referred to as bolsters. I remember seeing either a WIP thread or video on youtube by someone replacng the scales on a DD and reattaching the brass overlays. It ain't simple, maybe leave it for a pro rather than your first one. Also, you could scrounge around the auction site for a trashed one with good scales.

I removed bolsters once and reset them on another set of scales. Removing them can be done mechanically with a knife, but there is significant risk of bending the metal as it is very thin, or dissolving the celluliod in solvent. The new scales need to match the old one pretty close, otherwise, you will never get the bolsters to sit flush.

I would not worry about the bolsters, and just have a nice set of custom scales made for you father's razor. Also, Celluliod rot will cause rapid rusting of your blade, so you want to get some new scales on it sooner rather than later.

They sure are hard to take off without bending them, I can attest to that. I found that dropping them into a container with acetone will soften up the cellulose up and at least on one end on mine, it disintegrated leaving a great looking bolster. It some Dremel time with the other three. I am reusing mine on the shavette bling contest.

When you get the straight back, post a picture and get a second opinion. It might just be coincidentally occurring light pitting.

Fyi, for those paying attention this far in the thread its a DD satinedge with clear translucent no color scales.

Thanks, didn't pick that up at all. I figured they were straw colored celluloid like mine.

Lol, it might be that.. probably is what you are calling straw colored celluloid. It looked a lot like that from my memory.

I believe that's it. I'll post some pics when I get it back. At the very least I know I need to polish it after seeing that one!

It is nearly impossible to polish the blade and not affect the edge, at least that has been my experience.

I'll use it for a bit since Jon so kindly honed it for me. Then I'll polish it, may have to send it somewhere to have it honed, or may take the plunge, get some stones and try myself.
