So I'm sitting out back enjoying this cigar a lot... and Ed invites me over...

I get this bitter chocolate kind if hit in the first third but I suck at describing these things...

Since Ed went out of his way to invite me I thought I'd post for help, anyone whose had this how woild uoi describe it?, I like this cigar

I need to go dig up a casa magna to remember what I thought of it (damm so mad that I lost my cigar journal) But I think you nailed it on the head, its a chocolate flavor! Now is there anything else going on? a little bit of pepper? something earthy?

I'm glad you found the place again! I wasn't sure my invite was warm enough! :biggrin1: Is the chocolate taste bitter like its burnt, or bitter at first glance and then it mellows like a good piece of really, really dark chocolate?

Pepper I don't get.. earth yes like walking through a forest of dried leaves under foot

In the second third most of the chocolate is gone something I cant put my finger on here

The mellow one... like a very subtle sweetness comes as you rest your mouth from exhale

hmm...this intrigues me....is it like a nutty sort of sweetness?

btw i think we got caught over in the hab by steve :em2700:

About half way through... pepper I have now, but it isn't over powering

This is my favourite cigar of my last bunch... lots of flavours in this stick at this point

Something I really like put can't put my finger on, it almost has dried fruit maybe

I think the great thing is that the pepper isn't overwhelming. A lot of times it can be, and some guys really like that peppery kick in their smokes. defintely a YMMV type of thing.

dried fruit, like apples? or berries?

More like raisins, maybe a bit of apple nothing as sweet as berries, I think Its what the chocolate came to become as I smokes through

Cigar is done there is something familiar i still cant grab in my mouth.

I think the pipe smoker in me just keeps trying to find the sweet in every cigar so I might be pushing through other things

I specifically asked for cigars that didnt have overpowering pepper in them, even in my food I dont like a lot of black pepper as it dominates anything I eat, Wanted medium flavoured cigars with some depth, this by far is the winner

The Cuban was okay, I liked it but at the price point of them the RyJ just wasnt worht a repeat, ill try other cubans though
The Black market was nice but very one dimension to me... The punch was what I asked for but not my cup of tea I guess

This was right up my... wait, im not going there again, This was the ticket, Ill buy this again and search for other things similar next time at the shop

I wonder if it resting for a week had anything to do with it

I have found that cigars tend to have more earthy, bitter, spicer flavors than pipe smoking. BTW from start to finish it took you 30 min?! your a fast smoker, do you smoke cigarettes on a daily basis?

Yeah, I do I can calm a pipe or cigar down, but I have to be reading or doing something else other then just sitting out with a cigar or pipe and nothing else

I didnt bring any coffee or beer out with me and wasnt out for a walk, this tends to happen, though when I said in the first third i was pretty close to the end of that third so maybe a bit more time,... and I had more to smoke left but headlights pulled into my driveway and someone asked for directions, killed my moment and I wanted a drink lol so I hafd a good 5 minutes more...

The Black Market took me an hour to go through, and usually this sized cigar takes me from work to home and sit outside for ten minutes, which is about an hour total....

guess it depends on other distractions

It is entirely possible that i'm just getting a taste for cigars now since they are all I have had as of late without the pipe... maybe its allowed me to develope a pallet of sorts which is why I can detect other things

ahh I know exactly what you mean. For me I really have to have a drink of some sort while smoking a cigar. It kind of just adds that little bit extra soothing and relaxing to it all. Still all in all, seems like you had a great evening.

+1, I like a glass of scotch or rye with my cigars. But all in all, I'd have no complaints with your evening, James!

James, this Casa Magna Colorado was the first cigar I smoked just last week (and again earlier tonight!). You're describing the exact same flavours I mentioned in my post--chocolate, raisins (dark, dried fruit), and I got coffee/espresso instead of pepper. No pepper for me. But my post about it didn't inspire a bunch of guys to jump on board and go smoke some Casa Magnas like yours did. Anyway, I'm in the midst of a torrid love affair with cigars since I first had that Casa last week. My pipes must feel jilted. Oh well, there's just something about the hot humid summer that goes so well with a cigar.

I bet it was Kevin at Victory who hooked you up with this one.

EDIT: I will definitely be placing an order from a U.S. online retailer once I scope them all out and also hone my tastes a bit more. Like with pipe 'baccy, I can only go into debt so far supporting our friendly neighbourhood tobacconist while I explore the wide and wonderful world of cigars. Let me know if you want in on an order.

It was actually our post that got me thinking of casa magnas again! It just so happened that when james posted I was the last one stuck in the office and was taking a break before finishing stuff up and leaving. He just caught me at a good time.
