What's new

Can you ever have too much butterscotch?

Wow, that's a very nice collection.

Now I will ask what may be a very stupid question. What's the fuss with butterscotch here at B&B? I have even read where a butterscotch brush will go for a bit more $$ than some other color.

Now, don't get me wrong, I think butterscotch is a nice color--but lots of colors are nice. Is there some other significance to this butterscotch fetish, or is it simply about the color?

If I'm not mistaken, I'm not really a brush guy, a true butterscotch brush is an aged vintage brush. These brushes did not start off butterscotch in color, actually much lighter, but due to the material they were made of, they "dis-colored" as they aged, making them even more beautiful. Modern butterscotch brushes are made in a color to replicate this. It is the older "true" butterscotches that go for big $$.

There is absolutely nothing to the butterscotch craze, its ugly and really gross if you think about it. (I'll post my growing collection later).

Not only can you have too much Butterscotch, you have too much. Send at least two of thos brushes to me to properly align your collection. You can thank me later.

OK guys, another quick pic I snapped this morning with some names attached. The Duke had just been used. The Simpson 10 has be reknotted in 'Best', the 41 in 'Pure'. The Duke will get some new hair at some stage too I think.

I wasn't a butterscotch fan initially but it has grown on me, the original is far better than the recent copies IMHO, anyway, without further ado, another pic:

I'm still not sure about the 10, I prefer smaller brushes and this one is technically in the rotation again but I skip it often - I think I'll look to sell it again. Of course that leave a gap in the seven day set ....

Thank you for enlightening me. Art is truly in be eye of the beholder, I don't find butterscotch brushes attractive. I also find white handles boring but most of the major brush makers offer white and maybe black. I'm glad Whipped Dog and Rudy Vey give us an options to express ourselves through brushes.

Thanks for the comments guys! Glad you enjoyed the pic.

Correct. The butterscotch colour (spelt correctly!:biggrin1: ) comes from the effect of UV rays on the Catalin used in the earlier handles. The underlying material changed around the 1940/50s so later brushes will not have this effect.
OP, I'm afraid you're wrong... Brushes need at least a MONTH to dry out properly....:tongue_sm

Oh, really? I'm going to have to put a couple of shelves in and put my others to use!

I would have done as directed but for the comment above - I don't have a spare it seems!

Not just butterscotch, but VINTAGE SIMPSON butterscotch. That's some $$$$$ sitting on your counter there, brother.

And no, one cannot have too much.

You sure that's a 10? I had an S10 ages ago and it was much, MUCH bigger than that. At least an inch taller and 27mm knot.

Nice collection though.

The B2 and 41 are sexy. Are they original knots?

Yep, it is marked '10' - see my earlier thread on it here or the sale thread I had here for more pics. There are also pics of the 41 which was re-knotted in 'Pure' as I noted above.

The sale thread had the dimensions on it:

Handle 52mm high, 38mm diameter
Knot 52mm, 26mm diameter
Weight 81g

not forgetting the wee Wee Scot here and the NOS Culmak and Clemak here which are NOT in the rotation!

I think my sweet tooth has got me bad ....

If that 10 is a burden for you I may have some room in my rotation.

So are you havng them re-knotted by Simpson? I have a Butterscotch that I need to send them. If you have been dealing with them and wouldn't mind, could you PM me the address you use to contact them?

The MD, Mark Watterson, is probably not the most popular person here at B&B but there work is first rate. He will get back to you pretty quickly unless he is overseas or something on leave or at a trade show.
