Can I use hair clippers for my beard?

Hey guys,

I've been growing a full beard for about 3 and a half months and thought it was time to trim it back a bit. I bought clipper set and got home and realized it was meant for regular hair cuts, not beards.

Is there any reason I wouldn't be able to use this on my beard? It came with a 'beard trimmer' but the guards are shorter than I'm willing to go.

Thanks for the help!

PS: It's a Wahl Groom Pro, if that helps.

I go over my beard with hair clippers before shaving if I've got more than three days' growth. No guard, just the clippers. If you just want a trim, pick the guard for the length you want. Your kit should come with guards from 1/8 or 1/4 inch to 1 inch in 1/8 increments. It should work fine.

Thanks for the help. It's about 1.5 inches at the moment and I think I'd like to keep about a half inch or so, so is trimming with a guard a problem?

Aye that's the model I use for my goatee and have had no issues at all. I usually brush out the clipper after each trim and then oil the blades with some oil for my dog shears...lol

Been going fine for some months now.

I have had a beard off and on for a couple decades. Not so much since the wetshaving thing happened a couple years ago. I have both a beard trimmer and a regular hair trimmer and actually find that the wider head and the power of the hair trimmer works better for beards. I always kept my bear very short so I used a #1 or 2 setting. Give it a try.

Hair clippers will work on a beard, but if you intend to keep using them, invest in a regular beard trimmer. It will be easier to handle and more accurate to navigate around as you trim back your whiskers.

When trimming a beard with clippers, comb it into shape and then work the clippers AGAINST THE GRAIN.

Just knocked it down to a 4 and it looks great. Thanks for the help guys. This thing worked great, but it's a bit difficult to get the mustache since it's so big. The power of the clippers tore through everything else so I may try to find a guard for the trimmer that came with it to use for the stache.

Thanks again for the help!

Histpres, issues like it being too big for the mustache is probably the only issue you'll have. To remedy it you could just use a pair of hair cutting scissors to trim your mustache, cheaper than a whole new beard trimmer.

I find that hair clippers make a beard, goatee or stubble look better over a beard trimmer. Perhaps the blades are sharper and that leaves a better effect on the facial hair.

I use a Wahl Barber Clipper from the late 1960's that my Mom used to cut my hair, to trim my goatee. it works great, but doesn't quite get up to the mustache just under the nose. For that I use a small pair of scissors spaced with a pocket comb - works perfectly every time.
