What's new

Can anyone help identifying these Gillettes?

In my obsession over vintage Gillette's lately (my current MASSIVE AD). I've become particularly fond of the NEW's. I recently acquired a couple and am waiting on one more plus who knows what will happen on my auctions BUT. Here is what I've amassed so far and if anyone can tell me anything about any of them I'd appreciate it. I don't believe they're all the same but any input you guys can give is greatly appreciated. They all look identical to me. However the stamping on the back of the heads of each is different.

First is the family photo:

The one on the bottom right has this at the back of the head and I believe I asked about this and someone mentioned it's a "Bar handle new"

The one on the top right has this Canadian stamp

Finally the the one with the case appears to be a Red and Black. However the person I got it from wasn't sure if it was the original case for the razor or not. So if anyone can clarify I would appreciate it. This one is stamped with Patent #'s.

Depending on how my bids go I may be adding to this in the next week or so. Otherwise I struck out on all of them.

I'm not up on the really early stuff so no help on that. However...

If you post this in the Safety Razor Forum it will get exposure with the people who can ID them. Also a good resource to remember is B&Bs Shave Wiki under the How old is my Gillette DE? - US Gillette Dating Chart tab, as well remember www.mr-razor.com . Hope that helps!

As far as I know, a Red and Black is just a case set bar handle New produced in 1936. I'm not sure about the difference in News with and without patent dates. Check Krumbholz or Achim. News are also one of my favorites. I have 2 Red and Blacks - I was born in 1937, so I am calling them my birth year razors, which just didn't get sold until 1937.

I believe the ones without patent numbers are from earlier "NEW" production, prior to the patent infringement lawsuit and takeover of Gillette by Auto-Strop.

After the "merger" the numbers were stamped on the base plates.

I believe the "reissue" number one that was reassigned to Gillette, and may have originally applied to Auto-Strop's Probak razor prior to the settlement.

Does anyone happen to know if the one in the black and red case actually would belong in that case? I'm just unsure if the razor is actually part of that set or of the razor and box may have been acquired separately.
