Can anybody help me in deciphering EDC name?

I got some "lime" EDC samples from Colonial Drug. They decant them into tiny containers and then label them on little "sticky" dots with handwritten scrawls. I have been trying them out serially, and some I like better than others, but I can't tell what colognes they are from the chicken scratchings.

One of the ones I like the best is labelled (as far as I can tell) "mow bal" or perhaps "msw bal." It opens with a lime scent, but dries down to have a little bit of a more complex, slightly woodsy, slightly spicy scent.

Anybody have any idea what this EDC might be?

I can't make a connection at all.

How do they expect you to order the full bottle if they don't legibly the name on the label? Weird.

My guess is that they want to make sure you order a full bottle from them, rather than bargain hunting the web for the cheapest price. Maybe they figure if you cant read it you'll call and ask them what it was, and place the order through them. Just a guess, though.

Posting a picture wouldn't help; it's literally just a tiny container that says mow bal on it.

Can't you ask Colonial Drug what it means?

Obviously.

But I was trying to do a little more research about the fragrance before deciding whether I wanted to "invest" in it. I would love to see what was said about it at basenotes, for example.

I was in Colonial Drug a few weeks ago, and the fellow was very helpful. I don't believe he would mind at all if you called and explained you can't make out the label on the sample. I also don't believe he would pressure you to buy anything. He certainly didn't when I was in the store asking to try things. I wouldn't think twice about calling him. He'll probably laugh about the cryptic label he put on the sample.

I think you're correct that they want you to return to them to order the full product ... not a bad marketing ploy, although it does make it a little hard on you.

Its quite possible that "mow bal" is not the name of the product at all ... it could be an internal code for inventory purposes, like an SKU in alphabetical form. If that's the case, you'd never be able to figure out what it really is.

Just call them. The worst that can happen is that they will ask you to buy some, and you can always decline.

I wouldn't read too much into it. Every time they've sent me samples, there are always a couple that I simply can't decode. I've just emailed them and they send me a list of what I received. I don't see it as a marketing ploy at all. After that, you can look it up on basenotes, buy it from the web, whatever.

I've had the same problem with their samples, but it looks like they just use a cheap sticker on the vial (the ink always smears) and someone there has horrible handwriting.

They have included samples with some of my orders and I have no idea what most of them are. Perhaps they are rare and exotic?
