Can a shaving cream or soap be TOO good?

It occurs to me that there is a possibility that some shaving soaps and creams may be TOO good. I'm thinking that certain high-end products (Xpec & Martin de Candre, for instance) may be so thick and provide so much cushioning and glide that I (unintentionally) press my razor harder against my skin and thereby cause irritation and possibly an increased risk of nicks and cuts.

Hmm never had that problem. I always use painting strokes at the end of applying lather... that allows it to even out on my face and I know how much pressure to use.

Can the sunset be too pretty was a good comment. Yea I am a newbie but I would like to get the BEST lather ever. So this would be a good thing for me.

I don't believe that any shave product can really be too good. The most important thing to remember is to stay focused on your technique throughout the shave. By not staying focused, that can lead to problems.

I find that I get the best shaves from the cheapest products.
Maybe it's the "honest, get the job done" type of attitude that works.
The fancy schmancy stuff can't see the forest for the trees.

Yes, but only from the standpoint where some genius discontinues the product *cough*La Toja Manatiales*cough*, and I get extra sad when I finish it.

I, too, do not think any product can be too good (except for the Muhle R41 flesh-eater), but I do understand the OP's concern.

Sometimes I will use Alba Botannica or Avalon Organics brushless shave creams (because they are really good!). The instructions say to apply a thin layer for best results. If I apply too thick a layer, I will not get as close a shave. But that is due to my error, not the product being too effective for its own good.

Of course there can be too much of a good thing, at least for me. I much prefer my late model and well maintained Ford to a Cadillac or to a Rolls Royce.

I'm a Ford guy with Ford tastes.

My concern is not about the thickness of the cream but the viscosity and how it affects the contact patch between my razor and my skin. And no, Celestino, I am not getting rid of my high-end creams and soaps. Despite the theme of this thread, I love them too much.

So thick that you apply extra pressure? I would add more water to the mix.

I would say there can be soaps that are much better than others which make me want to use them more...e.g. MWF still gets 80%+ use in my den and has been for over 2 years.
