What's new

Cade, Durance & Trumpers - need a Boar Brush.

So far my collection is 15 bowls of soap (hard soap pucks and softer Proraso type soaps) and 10 shave sticks, and I usually use a bagder brush.

I got a Trumpers Coconut Oil soap puck last week, and was quite disappointed - lots of nicks - a far cry from the excellent Trumpers creams I have.

But yesterday I remembered my experience with Cade and Durance which also gave me lots of nicks when I used a badger brush, but which were excellent when I used a boar brush. So I retried Trumpers with a boar brush, and this time got an excellent shave.

Now I have to go and retry the Kent soap puck I posted negatively about here, two weeks ago.

Just wondering, am I the only one that finds boar brushes better than badger for a minority of soap pucks?
Regards,
Renato

Update: I used the Kent soap with a boar brush and got a good rather than a poor shave, as was the case when I used a badger brush.

I agree that both Cade and Trumpers work better with boar brushes than with badger, at least they do for me.
I would add Cella, and the rest of the Italian soft soaps for that matter, to the list. It's not that Cella doesn't work well with badger, but that it excels so effortlessly with boars.

Interesting thanks. I haven't actually tested the Italian ones out with a boar brush, since they seemed fine with a badger.

I have tried and PIFd a puck of Cade- shaving was ok, but it was finicky and quite a bit of work. Durance I do not know and I would suggest that your Kent soap is a re-branded MWF. I refuse to buy Trumpers soaps.

A boar brush won't hurt, but a great soap makes life easier.

Thanks. I'd suggest that rather than a great soap making life easier, it's a case of slightly softer soap making life easier. I especially think that Cade is a really good soap.

Have you had bad experiences with Trumper's soap or Trumpers in general?
Cheers,

I have tried Trumper's soap and won't buy it again. Their creams on the other hand are very good, but I am a soap shaver so that doesn't particularly help me.

For my soap pucks I use Vie Long horse - enough backbone to handle the soaps and deliver world-class lather.

As for Trumper soap, I only have Limes, which is not a stellar performer, but it was my first, so I hold onto it for sentimental reasons. DR Harris and QCS are my go-to soaps.

Thanks. I keep hearing about horse hair brushes, but haven't come across them for a spur of the moment purchase. Interesting to see that not everyone is a badger brush enthusiast.

I have a puck of Cade that works quite well with a 24 mm TGN grade a silvertip. On that note, my favorite and best brush to lather up Nancy Boy is a Semogue 830. speaking of ymmv....

Plainly, by your experience, brushes do make a difference.

Consider a good 2-band badger for these fussy soaps after you've snagged your boar.

FWIW the Semogue SOC is the best boar I've used. I could live with just that one.

Semogue seems to be a favourite of many - I'll keep an eye out for it, thanks. I currently have mostly cheap Australian Windsor boar brushes, one of which has already fallen apart. But the more expensive Windsor Boar brush seems to be doing an excellent job so far.
