Bushmills

I am travelling to Northern Ireland in a few months and thinking about visiting the Bushmills distillery. Does anyone have any thoughts or recommendations regarding a visit to Bushmills?

bring cash, take back a couple of bottles of black bush,

"bushmills ? thats protestant whiskey..."

Just remember that you're allowed to bring back only 1 liter of alcohol duty-free. We came back from Scotland with 5 liters. :w00t:

there were some bad mouthing of bushmills, becuase its from northen ireland,
being from a protestant area there were claims of hiring and treatment discrimination against cathlocis, not sure of it was real or just rumos,

This must have changed recently. A couple of years ago, I brought 4 or 5 bottles of wine back from Canada with no extra duty. Also brought in 2 liters of Drambuie on another trip.

volunteer for anything, buy special release only available from there, consider the opportunity to get a cask as a share with others and dismiss all rubbish of sectarianism here and there. buy what you think, do not wait until you leave the area as you will have missed your chance. For me, THE BEST Irish Distillery - it's a terrific place

Ignore the religious issues, the vast majority of the people on the island here do and it's not a factor in day to day life.

It's a beautiful part of the country and there are several members here who live
closer to the area than I do and can most likely advise you better.

What I will say is make sure to check out the Giant's Causeway nearby which is an UNESCO World Heritage site.

And you have to cross this rope bridge also in the area:

I'd recommend to keep the whiskey sampling until after the rope bridge

Thanks everyone for your comments. Giants Causeway is definitely on the itinerary, but I do plan to stay away from that rope bridge:w00t:
Having visited a number of Bourbon distilleries -- Maker's Mark, Woodford Reserve, Heaven Hill -- I'm looking forward to seeing how Bushmills compares.

Poisonous nonsense; this seems to be a school of thought I hear (mostly) from North Americans. I've lived in N.I. all my life and until a few months ago had never heard of this.

I have to agree with Magicpixie, I've never heard anyone in Dublin or anywhere
in Ireland using religious terms when describing whiskey.

That's 1 liter per adult in the family on the trip; SWMBO counts too!!

Correct. But even then, when you consider that you are allowed 200 cigarettes and 100 cigars per adult, allowing only 1 liter per adult is criminal!

I suppose what I am saying is don't buy something that you can get here even if it is a bit cheaper. Go nuts in duty free though. :w00t:

Know the prices at home when you go into a duty free store. The last couple of times that I've gone through Frankfort, the prices and the exchange rate made everything undesirable.

For me, the duty free is the place I get stuff I can't get back home.

I tried the 18yo bushmill at a irish whisky tasting session at a local irish pub. Man was that good. Up there with Redbreast and the now unavailable Jameson Gold:frown: Get the older stuff. You can get black bush and the regular bushmills at the local liqour joint:w00t:
