Bunch of new tobacco- try em all or keep em sealed?

I ordered a bunch of GL Pease tobacco to expand my collection and have a dilemma. Do you guys open em all up to try them out, or do you keep them sealed and go through one at a time? I know I can jar them after opening them, but wasn't sure if I shouldn't wait a bit to get some age on them?

Open them now. Virginia blends change as they age, but if you don't know what they taste like fresh you have nothing to compare them too later. Young virginia blends tend to have a less sweet grassy flavor than their aged counterparts. If the blends are latakia heavy they won't benefit as much from aging. .

C&D produced blends hace a date sticker on the bottom and sometimes you get lucky and get a tin that already has some significant age on it.

As a relatively new pipe smoker, I open each new tin as I am ready to sample it. If I am not smoking it regularly, I jar it and move on to the next tin. I have about 20 in jars, 4 OTCs in open pouches and 4 tins yet to open

I use the 1/2 pint wide mouth "Ball Collection Elite" fancy mason jars, perfect for 50 gm or 2 oz tins.

I decided to go 50/50. I cracked open the Union Square, Quiet Nights, Chelsea Morning and the Key Largo. I opened the Union Square based on Quan's solid point about tasting it while youngish (though this one is a year old) so I can appreciate the changes in an aged tin. Regarding the others, I am taking my time and smoking more bowls of each tin rather than going nuts with all of them. Ghosts were a concern, but I also wanted to take time to "get to know them"...

And yes, I realize I will likely lose patience and open them all within the month.

Open them up. Give them all a try. Don't sweat the "ghosts" too much. Latakia heavy blends and Lakeland varieties will ghost, but here's a nice little trick....Keep a pouch of Prince Albert around and smoke a bowl or two of that after a particularly "heavy" blend and it will in a sense "reset" your pipe and you can then enjoy other blends without any invading spirits. Plus a little sunshine and fresh air helps...both you and your pipes. Leave your pipe in indirect sunlight on a day with a mild breeze and it will keep them nice and sweet.

As others have said jars will become your best friend although I have pretty good luck with mid-term storage in the round aluminum tins with plastic lids. Always jar up tobacco that comes in a square/rectangular tin they never reseal.

I say open and try. Mason jars can be found for cheap in any big box store, failing that, Amazon is a good source.

The interweb agrees with me here....

+1 to open them all up, but a good idea is to transfer the tobacco from the tin to a small mason jar. You can then later come back to the jar and the tobacco will not be dried out at all - even after a few years. Half pint holds around 50-75 gram of tobacco no problem. I find sometimes that at first i don't like a certain tin but later on your tastes may change. That and the tobacco ages which can cause a good change after the first 6 months or so.
