What's new

Digging into the cellar

I had actually not really had any pipes over all for a while, without any real reason. I just never felt like I had the time, or was in the mood, etc.. Then I realized that with the work from home, and my job tasks allowing me almost 10 hours a night to sip away to my hearts content, I've started coming back to my pipes, and my stash. The upside was that while I was taking my break, my cellar just kept happily aging away.

Last night I cracked open a jar of 7 year old Luxury Bullseye Flake. Just amazing! Now as I look through the list of what is on hand I can't wait to open up a tin of Escudo, or Golden Sliced, both with about the same amount of time on them.

I've not bought anything new for tobacco in close to that long, so just about everything I have now has at least 5 years on it, waiting patiently for me to get back to them.

I am in the same boat with the mason jars which is why my plan is to use them first. Hopefully by that time the canned stuff will have aged like fine wine when I’m ready to crack them open.

I have several jars opened that I know I'll pretty much never finish... stuff I bought one tin of to try, and just didn't like it enough to even smoke through the tin. Once I get down to dealing with those, having a few more open jars/tins won't bother me (or the storage space) as much.

Remember to forget me!
Splitting each newly opened tin between 4 mylar pouches (or 3 pouches and a small jar), is one of the smartest things I've done with tobaccos. No more worries about having tobaccos open for too long, or thinking "I'll never smoke a whole tin of this", as there's only ever 4 to 8 bowls worth open, depending on the size of pipe used.

So you have a home vacuum seal setup to go with the mylar bags, I would guess? That is a great idea, and I do keep thinking of getting a vacuum sealer for food I'm going to freeze. It could serve dual purpose then. lol

I do, but I only heat seal the pouches of tobacco with it, not suck the air out. So it's like jarring it up, but without the bulk, weight, or expense.

"Can't Raise an Eyebrow"
I have yet to "recover" from having too many jars open, still having dozens of small mason jars that house a tin full of blends that I first bought as I tried to sample "everything" when I first started my pipe journey. I sometimes wonder if I'll ever get to some blends that I have in the cellar. Most of my limited pipe smoking usually involves only a half dozen blends or less. I occasionally want to revisit "old friends" of tobacco, but then I stop short and think, "but I have all this other stuff open that I need to whittle down" and so it seems that I make no progress what so ever. The upside is that I have a lot of 5-7 yr. old tobacco on hand. Some a little older. If I live long enough, I''l have a lot of 20 yr. old tobby on hand in the end.
