What's new

Bulleit Bourbon.

My mom recently took a trip to sunny Florida to visit my grandmother, and my aunt (her sister) was down at the same time. Apparently Floriday has better prices on Liquor so they stocked up. I had a call one day and she asked if there was anything I'd like! Well I was asking which bourbons they had and the guy working there recommended to her to get me Bulleit if I had not had it yet, which I had not. Heard good things, but never had it.

So last night I cracked the bottle and had maybe 4-5oz (I enjoy bourbon now, so I make it last). WOW is that stuff good. I would dare say smoother than Woodford Reserve, though WR might have a bit more flavor to it. I found it actually was better as it warmed so next time only one ice cube for that amount (I still like to add just one cube).

I guess Bulleit Rye will be next on my list. This is a bit pricy here in NY, but a bottle usually lasts me a month or three.

So, down the slippery slope of Bourbon I go...

An excellent bourbon for the price or at any reasonable price IMHO. One large cube of ice and you are good to go; I have not tried it yet in a Manhattan but suspect it mixes well also.

Yes, an excellent bourbon. Smooth with a different taste than most other bourbons. Down here in FL I can buy a 1.75 ltr bottle for $50.

I like it too. It's spicy. It reminds me of Atomic Fireballs - that spicy cinnamon candy that was everywhere when I was a kid. I don't find it incredibly smooth though. I think it goes down kinda rough. Maybe that's because I drink my bourbon either neat or with just a very few drops of water - never ice.

Atomic fireballs? Are we talking about the same bourbon?! Fireball brand tastes like the candy, incredibly sweet, overly sweet. Bulleit is (to me) smooth in its aftertaste, pleasing to the back of the pallette, never the burn like you can light your breath on fire. As someone who nearly vomits at the flavor of artificial cinnamon in anything, we must have very different senses!

I don' mean the Fireball brand cinnamon whiskey. I've never tried that stuff and I never will - I hate artificial flavoring too. I'm talking about the actual Atomic Fireball candy that I ate when I was a kid. It's light on sweetness and heavy on spicy cinnamon (as I remember it).

I don't get much spiciness from Bulleit, but I guess that just goes to show that, like cigars, wine, or numerous others, we each interpret flavors uniquely.

Hmmm 90 proof. I might need to try making an Old Fashioned with the stuff. I usually use Woodford because I don't like my Old Fashioned to taste watered down and it handles it well. If Bulleit is 90 proof but also smoother tasting it might just make a great cocktail.

I was underwhelmed when I bought a bottle of Bulleit Bourbon, but their rye is a mainstay in my cabinet. Found the 1L for $25 a few weeks ago sitting right next to the 750ml for $23 (duh on that one). I may need to revisit their bourbon especially if my store has it in the 1L for the same deal.

IMO the rye might be a bit better than their bourbon. Both seem good to me. Neither great---but decent value.

There are two Bulleit bourbons, the one in the box is aged 10 years, cost more but is better IMHO.

How does one get atomic fireball from this whiskey? And how can anyone call it rough at all? Makers Mark, now THAT is rough. Not even worth the money (IMHO).

Bulleit and Woodford are going to remain on my shelves from now on. Pricey, but good stuff. I will get the Rye! :)

I don't think Maker's is rough at all. And while it isn't top notch, I think it's a very credible small batch whiskey. I tend to like wheated bourbon, though.

Maker's rough? We could be talking about razor blades, just change whiskey brands to blade brands. YMMV and all. Hehe.

I used to drink Maker's until I got into rye.
