Brush rotation?

Do you hear anyone here complaining about brushes rotting, or going moldy?

I've been using the same Plisson badger brush for nearly 20 years. I've been shaving every other day for most of that time, and daily for some of it.

The brush lives in its holder, handle up. No special treatment at all.

I suppose I've proved that two brushes is surely "enough", with daily shaving. I suspect that one brush is also enough.

We buy them because we're acquisitive, not because we need more.

Thanks, that's good two hear and I certainly understand the urge to buy more of a beautiful product. I'm new to the wet shaving business, hence my ignorant question.

I did not hear about rot or mould on this forum but lately someone was complaining about bristle loss in his brush. He was advised to get a second brush to allow for some rotation.

Ideally having 2 or 3 brushes is the way to go, especially if you own very dense brushes like the Chubby, where the hair knot is very dense and drying time is 2-3 days.

With that said you will find people who have used the same brush daily for years even decades - so there you have it..

"....having 2 or 3 brushes is the way to go....."?!:scared:

Who are YOU and what have you done with Claus?!

Something SOMEONE finds too bad, so to speak....:biggrin1:

To the OP: Claus SAYS right, IMHO.

You only need one brush. One of our member's grandfather shaved with the same brush for 60 years. The reason most of us have more than one brush is because shaving is a hobby, and we like to collect brushes. I have 4 brushes. I use one most of the time and the others on occasion when the mood strikes me.

Do you need more than one brush? No, be it's fun to try different ones. I have one brush I bought at a Hoffrtiz store more than 30 years ago and I use it regularly. Then my son gave me a gift set that has a Caswell-Massey brush about 15 years ago. Those brushes were the only ones I used for years. And then I found B&B and my brushes multiplied to 9.

27 razors = 27 brushes. Yes, I have a problem. The first step, is admitting you have a problem.

A shaveacolic? I fear that's what I'm about to become. I shave straight for two months and I already own three razors (and thinking about buying a fourth one). And subconsciously I was probably looking for an excuse to buy more brushes by starting this thread...

I just try to tell him that he can get by fine with just one brush, but 2-3 is more fun and you get variety and your brushes will dry completely before each shave.

If I told him 50 brushes was the ideal number, he would think I'm mad - but I will have 50 top quality badger brushes in my den very soon......

Only 50 brushes? I have 3 with a 4th on the way.

Is it true you should have a rotation of razors that are each paired with a different brush, soap and blade for each day of the month? I thought I read that someplace on here the other day ;-)

Now that is an Idea! 31 would be good idea too. One for each day of the month and the favorite for the 31st.
I say go with 30 for everyday and on months with 31 you shave with your favorite twice.

I've owned 40 brushes over the past 3 years, 18 is the max I've had at one time. I'm at 10 now. Don't think I'd get more unless I swap it for one I own.

You really only have to have one brush, and that will more than do the job. Its just that many members like having a rotation just for the variety of it. I have a 5 brush rotation, and each is different. I choose a certain brush by the way I feel the shave should go at the time, a stiffer brush, or a shorter loft, or fan shape, etc. Its all up to you, but when it comes down to it, one brush could serve the purpose.
