Brush Question

Hey all,

This is my first post - so hello! I am relatively new to DE shaving and a couple of weeks in and love it. I am using an older Hoffritz DE that my father gave me, you can tell it has a few miles on it but I really enjoy using it and have caught on quickly.

Anyway I am using an Art Of Shaving Fine Brush (the medium quality one - around $110 new on AOS site) I had picked up sometime ago and it seems to be doing the job well with MWF. My question is who makes the brushes for AOS? Are they of quality? German? English? So little info is available on these - not even on the AOS website. Anyone have any info on these? Is it worth looking at something else?

Love the site - some great info here!

Welcome to B&B.

Nice razor you are using.

Someone will come along shortly and fill you in on the AOS brushes

Quick note on AoS quality and customer service. Had an AoS $50 brush that lasted 2 years before the knot fell out of the handle one day last month whilst I was home in Canada on vacation. I emailed AoS, they offered to replace it free of charge. Shipped the broken brush to them and they shipped a new one back to me in Norway, all within 10 days and arrived the day I got home. Great customer service but YMMV.

AOS don't have a large presence in my part of the world, so I am unable to help out by answering your question. If you were to post a photo of your brush, I feel sure that someone will be able to identify it for you.

Welcome to Badger and Blade.

Welcome to B&B.

I"m not sure about the source of AOS brushes. I do recall this question being raised before, but don't recall any authoritative (or even non-authoritative) answers.

At that price point I imagine that it's a pretty good brush and if it's working for you to whip up some lanolicious MWF lather that's nothing to sneeze at.

Sounds like you're off to a great start with your vintage Hoffritz (that sound you hear is me drooling) and MWF is fantastic.

Be sure to post your questions, experiences etc. here on the newb forum.

Best Regards!

First, Welcome to B&B! I think you'll find everyone here to be extremely helpful and a wealth of knowledge. I've learned an incredible amount in a short time frame. Glad you are catching on quickly! Enjoy that razor, sounds neat and the fact it was your Dad's is really cool! IMO their brushes are of good quality, although you can find many different brands and brushes at that same pricepoint that may be of more value.

I personally have had a very different experience with their $50 brush, owning and using it exclusively for 5 years with no problem. However, I had a cream completely dry up (pin sized whole in the lid) and they exchanged a tub 60% used for a brand new one no questions asked!

I think those brushes are made by Mühle, in Germany. But I may be wrong.

WELCOME to B&B !

Whatever brush fits your expectations and gives you a good shave, is a good brush. There are lots of brush companies out there and they make a vast variety of brushes.Usually you get what you pay for. Grades of hair, selection and amount of hair per brush determine the price range. Of course the handle material can also make up quite a difference. I highly recommend to look at horse hair brushes, usually much cheaper than high quality badgers and amazing lathering properties.

Yup, word on the street is Mühle although they're quiet about this for obvious reasons. Great brushes, by the way. My son in law has one and it's bloomed into a giant puffball.
Welcome to B&B!

Thanks for all of the replies! Yes after looking at The Muhle brushes one of them is almost a dead ringer for mine.

The razors AOS sell look quite a bit like Merkurs to me so I would have that they would have them supply the brushes as well and work with one German supplier - (maybe I am wrong on the razors). You would think they would at least put "Made in Germany" on the brush description webpage/box if it is true. They do that for some of their other products. Well regardless I am very happy with my brush - it is a bit large but does its job well. B&B is such a great resource.
