What's new

Brush height, size, etc.

Uncle Si and I are looking at some cool looking Whipped Dog brushes and I'm wondering since I bowl lather, unless it's Arko, what does all the mm etc mean on the knot? What should I be looking for? Helpppppppppp!
Thanks Jack!

Mmmmmmm? Let me see, typically that would be "millimeters", 1/1000th of a meter. 1 mm= 0.0393701 inches. 25.4 mm = 1 inch. Oh, I bet you want to know what the mm stuff means to us. The knot size (mm) is the width of the base of the brush knot (the actually hair part). It's all relative but knot diameters run in the 20-30mm range. 22-24 is a very standard size. The other thing you need to know and determine is the depth the knot is set in the handle and what the loft (exposed bristles/hairs above the handle) will be once the knot is set. Bowl latherers usually do well with a standard set know in the 50mm range. Face latherers often go with a deeper set for a denser/stiffer loft. Larry can help you out on choosing and designing your brush. Great folks there at WD!

+1 to 22-24mm x 50mm for your application. My preference would lean toward 24mm, but 22mm is perfectly adequate..
