Brush Handles Made without a Lathe?

I see a lot of custom work featuring turned handles on a lathe. Quite elegant. But what about handles made with other instruments, resulting in a more angular design as if sawn or hewn, or smoothed as if off a lathe? Might they not have an appeal of their own? Any posted image examples of these with explanations as to the process used would be appreciated.

I don't have any to show, but I have seen other handles made without a lathe. I've heard of people using a drill (especially for making the hole for the knot), others using a pocket knife, others used carving tools.

There are a few examples here but it takes quite a bit of searching to find them. Sorry I don't have any specific examples.
