What's new

Brrr. It's getting cold out. Time for.

...for....hmmmmm. Time for what?

For those of you who have seasons where it gets cold, what do you like to eat?
Today it's a chilly day and my wife has a great looking beef stew in the slow cooker.
I can smell it and let me tell you... it smells yummy.

Chili, soups, stews, those are cold weather foods for me.

So, what about you?

I made Mexican Stew yesterday.

Pork Shoulder (with bone)
1 diced white onion
1 diced jalapeno
2 celery sticks diced
1 carrot, diced
1 potato diced (but I prefer 2)
2 cloves of garlic, diced
Salt and pepper
1 teaspoon of cumin
Cover with water

Slow cook for 8 hours

Serve with raw diced onions, coriander and corn chips to dunk in the stew. Pretty awesome stuff!

Chili is a winner for me. I prefer a three bean type, generally without noodles. Great Northern, Kidney and a can of the Bush's Chili in medium sauce.

Saute onions and garlic, brown hamburger, add spices, beans and tomato juice to taste. Fast and delicious.

My wife's chili is a great one for cooler weather.

Her recipe:

  • Brown hamburger and diced onions.
  • Put the resulting hamburger and onions in a large pot.
  • Add 1 large jar of tomato juice, 2 cans of diced tomatoes, 2 cans of chili beans, 2 cans of water, chili powder and cayenne pepper to taste, salt and pepper.
  • Simmer for about for about 30 minutes.
  • Add two hand fulls of spaghetti (cut) and simmer for about 45 minutes.

She makes enough to freeze and it is a treat.

Stamppot zuurkool! (sauerkraut and mashed potatoes) or hutspot (carrots, onions, and mashed potatoes).

Well since I'm too far south for Muk tuk, one of my favorites is beef stew with hot biscuits. For breakfast Sunnyboy/Red River cereal. And hot coco instead of coffee when I come in from the cold, like when you are playing hockey at the outdoor rink.

One thing I do a lot of across the winter is coq au vin in the slow cooker. I sauté the veggies and brown the chicken in a skillet the night before, then let the chicken marinate overnight in wine and stock using the slow cooker crock as a container. That makes it very easy to throw into the slow cooker on low in the morning and it is done by the time I get home. The strained sauce goes back in the skillet on the stove top to be reduced and the sautéed vegetables reheated. Served over egg noodles it's mighty tasty!

All winter I will be looking for whole chickens or bone-in breasts to go on sale. When they do I will filet the breasts or part out the whole chickens and make chicken stock out of what's left. I can a couple of dozen jars in the pressure cooker and am set for the rest of the year, plus have a freezer full of chicken.

At Christmas we'll have a ham, the last bits of which will be used in bean or split pea soup. Most of that is going to be canned for use throughout the winter. Last year I didn't get around to it and just froze the bone and last bit of meat until I mad soup a couple of weeks ago.

Last but not least, there is probably what has to be America's favorite winter meal. That would be tomato soup and a grilled cheese sandwich.

Fat, salt and starch are what I crave in winter. I usually work outside all day so I need this type fuel to keep me warm. Is it odd though, as long as I remember, I have always had ravenous hankerings for ice cream during these cold months?

Chili, soup/stew (especially beans with smoked ham hocks), lamb with beans and onions in a Dutch oven slow-braised, . . . and a thick fleece jacket.

+1. Many a winter Friday night after work has had this for dinner. Quick and easy and filling. Especially if you put some rice in the tomato soup.

Sauerkraut. Couldn't imagine winter months without sauerkraut.

Mulled wine. Another "must" when it's cold out.

Wild mushroom lasagna
Pork with apples and onions
Beef stew
Pork with sauerkraut
Gnocchi with Gorgonzola
Hazelnut chicken
Kale and sausage stew
Stuffed Peppers
Osso Bucco

the list goes on . . , Now I'm hungry!

Most of those sound delicious!

Almost forgot - a big bowl of my mother's homemade marinara sauce with a few homemade meatballs and a loaf of good Italian bread. And a touch of Parmesan (the real cheese - Parmigiano-Reggiano, none of this cheese in a can stuff). I would love a bowl right now . . .
