What's new

British Techs.

Good morning gentlemen (and ladies). My 1971 English Tech weighs 30 grams. 12 gram handle, 18 grams for the cap and comb. I think the handle (2.75 inch) is aluminum, but what metals are the cap and comb if not aluminum? Has anyone measured the blade gap on one of these? Sorry, I don't have a feeler gauge.

Most Techs had brass caps and guard plates. There are some reports of zamak or aluminum caps in later models, and 1971 might be late enough for that.

Weighing the cap alone would help, but I am not sure you could be 100% certain because some caps may have been a little thicker than others.

The comb weighs 8 grams, the cap weighs 10 grams. Cap has the embossed Gillette logo and when held by the threads "rings" when you flick it with a fingernail like my Feather AS-D2, so pressed steel perhaps?

Most, if not all, Tech head parts were stamped from thin sheet metal. That was an important innovation for Gillette, because they could make Techs very cheaply and give them away to sell blades. Earlier razors tended to need more machine work, which added both labor and material costs.

Gillette very rarely used steel, and never used stainless to my knowledge. Does it react to a magnet? Anyway I think 10-g is probably too light for steel.

I just weighed a UK NEW cap at 15-g and a 1970s Tech at 10-g. But the Tech cap is much thinner than the NEW, so I suppose they could both be brass. Or my Tech might be a zinc alloy (zamak), or aluminum.
