British Made Silver DE-Souplex?

This razor is in a Gillette Case, Made in England, and engraved "SOUPLEX MADE IN ENGLAND" on the bottom of the blade holder. It is an open comb in silver but does not indicate Gillette on the razor. The handle is solid and the head an old style. I looked it up and found a 1950's silver tech that looked like the same one but cannot remember where I found it now. Can anyone help identify or have one like this?

No help with an ID unfortunately but what a handsome razor that is!

PS - if you search 'Souplex' on eBay there's an auction for a very cool looking blade wrapper (with no bids) that would look great in that case...

Thanks fellows that should give me some homework tonight to research this further. I am wondering if this may be one of the British companies that Gillette bought out and took over production?

Thanks and the blades look like the same company and blades are the normal ones like we all use. No one seems to know about the razor even though it is a high quality razor.

Thanks Aaron, I bought them and they are being sent from England which may take some time. Anyway, like you said it will be a complete set with the original blades in the case.

I have a Souplex razor and it gives a great shave with Astra/Feathers so far. I'm thinking it's a Souplex razor in a Gillette case... it happens

I have one of these branded Big Ben but they were also available as Souplex and Paragon razors. They're very nice razors and are pretty much identical to the Gillette Old Type when shaving.

The original case was brown bakelite but a different shape and was branded the same as the razor.

Wow, the motherlode...Thanks, for the comments and pictures. And, I though mine was the only one around. I agree that they are extremely well made and have the heft and solid silver handle that does not crack. The open comb is a little too aggressive for what I have been used to.

Got one with a travel set. Very nice razor. In fact the only DE I use now (trimming around mo), having been lured to the SE side.

Yep Pjotr, same razor but with a travel kit. I have been using Gillette Bleue and next maybe a Shark in mine. With the heft it seems to glide somewhat but on the aggressive side with the open comb. I usually do not shave with OC's

Hi Guys,

Yes, Souplex and Big Ben are identical razors and were made by the same company.

Souplex also came in Bakelite and half bakelite/metal models too.

There were hundreds of English-made razors - I'm researching them but it may take a while :)

That's an awesome looking razor. :thumbup1:

Thanks gents and it is interesting to wonder why these razors are not made today with the quality including the other Brit Aristocrats, etc

I was pleasently surprised as I initially thought it would be a Chinese or Indian clone made of tin. It's a very nice razor.

Souplex , LTD, Morecambe, England. they made metal razors and plastic. nickel plated. Suoplex also made ladies miniature razors, the Nymph. The Minor razor was also made by Suoplex....Yes Big Ben is its twin, the chromiun plated twin. also the Paragons, are same but not many made.

don't forget Wardonia (not made by Souplex, but one of the English manufacturers).

Alex and Jim, come through again with accurate and indepth information. Alex has contributed several times to my mystries and questions. That is what makes BnB a fun place. The Souplex is more aggressive than the Old Style, Regent, and Fat Handled Tech IMHO.

I don't have any of those other models but do remember from back in the pre-SE days when I was a poor (maybe a bit richer actually), blissfully ignorant, happy and enthusiastic DE shaver, that it gave me the best couple of shaves I'd had up to that date. Yes, a bit aggressive but from memory I was using a new Feather blade and was cheerfully buffing away. No problemmo.
